Developer backs plan for veterans’ village

A NATIONAL housebuilder has donated £750,000 into anAylesford project to support military veter- ans. The cash injection from the firm

will help Royal British Legion In- dustries bankroll itsmost ambitious project to date – a £14million pro- gramme for support facilities and homes for former service personnel and their families. The Centenary Village scheme

willmark the RBLI’s 100th anniver- sary, andwill complement the char- ity’s existing facilities by extending the services and accommodation it operates in the area. Planners say Centenary Village

will include an assisted living scheme, extending the charity’s care and support service by a further 24 units. An additional 24 new apart- ments, costing £1.3m,will house sin- gle veterans, alongside 20 family homes in amix of town andmews- style housing. Acommunity centre is also on the drawing board, where veterans and

their families will access services, welfare support and training. Steve Sherry, chief executive of the

charity, which was established in 1919 to provide care, support and employment for veterans of the First WorldWar - said: “We believe those who have served, many of whom were injured, disabled, or have de- veloped health needs as a result of their time in service, deserve our support. Their sacrifice, and that of their families, is profound, which is why we are doing everything we

possibly can to be here for those in need.We are completely focused on how we can meet the ongoing and complex needs of ex-service person- nel and their families for the next hundred years.” Last year, the charity invested

£4.3min 24 specially-adaptedapart- ments for wounded, injured and sick ex-service personnel, and se- cured a further £3.7mto expand fa- cilities, including 12 newcare suites, a newday care centre, anddementia training for the entire nursing team.
