Holsteiner Verband

Dr. Tomas Nissen of the Holsteiner Verband, began their tour with the support of the American judge, Dr. Kim Gill- Favier. Te Holsteiner stallion Contefino (Con- tender) stands at this farm and is a stamp stal- lion in terms of jumping performance. His foals were eagerly awaited this year. Tere were many good quality horses pre- sented. First, there was double success for breeder Patti Mahaffey. She pre- sented both the champion mare Harlow (Dolany out of Coco Chanel / Cheva- lier), who had particularly excellent style and far above average movement. She also presented the winning foal, a colt by Contefino out of Anyka (Cortilo x Grundyman xx). Tis foal was without question one of the best in the whole tour and was hard to beat in terms of type and movement, earn- ing scores of 9 for type and 8 for movement.

New Mexico Host for the Rio Grande region was again Guy and Sharon McEl- vain’s Rancho Corazon. Especially great was the joy of the reunion with veteran member Betty McEl- vain, who brought Holsteiner horses to New Mexico almost 50 years ago. Tis makes this site one of the oldest Holsteiner stud farms in America. Show jumping is a McElvain family event, which clear- ly illustrates why they are so successful in both breeding and competing Holstein- er horses. Te cham- pion mare at Rancho Corazon was Hauteur RC (Contento out of Shona) owned and bred by Rancho Corazon. Te top foal was Lancelot RC (Limulus x Quick Star), also owned and bred by Rancho Corazon.

Florida Andras Szeiberth’s Prai- rie Pines Farm in Well- born, Florida was clearly professionally prepared to host a wonderful event. Te Holsteiner Federation banner and advertising posters with the inscription “Hol- steiner are winners!” were fitting descriptions of the impressive offspring from their own stallion Lotus T (Lemgo x For Te Moment xx). With 20 judged Holsteiner mares and foals, this site was the largest platform for Holsteiner horses on the American tour and Andras did an excellent job of mak- ing special preparations for everyone. For the European breeding judges, the hot and humid climate in Florida was a special challenge that required plenty of fluids and frequent changes of wardrobe. In addition to the Lotus T progeny, there were also

interesting Toroughbred mares. Tose mares were all approved for breeding and genetic extension. Te win- ning foal Lyrica T at Prairie Pines Farm was by Lotus T out of Boudica, an extremely elastic foal that would have convinced all in Holstein of the championship quality. Tis quality was not only determined by the father Lotus T, but also by the mother Boudica by ES Benidetto, owned by Sydney Frost. Boudica was re- garded a top mare with strong gaits and declared cham- pion mare by the commission.

Virginia Hyperion Stud is a very successful breeder of Hol- steiner horses in Virginia. Tis fantastically located stud farm of Vicky Castegren in Barboursville is an ideal place for the breeding and raising of sport hors- es. Te hostess spared no effort to pamper visitors and breeders with amenities. Te horses to be assessed were presented in a closed riding hall, which is rare in the United States. It was perfect for the guests and the horses being presented to the commission. Hermione M-S by Concerto Grosso, owned and bred by Rose- marie Merle-Smith, was champion mare. She is a modern type and very correct.
