rounds to come before any medals were awarded. In team competition, the United States emerged with the
gold. Their team was comprised of two male and two female riders aboard one gelding and three mares. The silver went to Sweden’s three male and one female riders aboard two mares and two geldings. The bronze was claimed by Germany’s two females and two males riding two mares, one stallion and one gelding. The individual gold went to the amazingly rail-free combi-
nation of Simone Blum (GER) and her chestnut mare DSP Alice, making Simone the first female rider to become jump- ing world champion since the WEG began. Gail Greenough, the first female world champion, had won the jumping championships before the World Equestrian Games concept was adopted. Male riders from Switzerland claimed the silver (Martin
Fuchs aboard the gelding Clooney) and bronze (Steve Guer- dat aboard the mare Bianca). After all the rounds were complete, three female riders made the top 12 (those to make it to the final round).
Gold medalist Simone Blum and her mare DSP Alice demonstrated a brilliant partnership. The pair went clear on all their rounds at the WEG.
Their list of horses included four geldings, one stallion and seven mares, and two of those mares earned indi- vidual medals. Considering that the start of the competi- tion boasted 60 geldings, 43 stallions and only 36 mares, it is obvious the mares seriously outperformed their male counterparts. I do believe Joe Fargis was right about mares at the top
of sport. If they like you—and that may be the most telling criteria of all—they will just keep trying for you.
