TE EVENTING AT WEG

Left: Rosalind Canter and Allstar B of Great Britain won the individual gold at the WEG. This is one of many water jumps on course. Right: Irish rider Padraig McCarthy and Mr. Chunky earned individual silver.

England and is owned by Lucy, Huw Lloyd and Christopher and Sarita Perkins. Perhaps one of the best-educated riders at the WEG,

Padraig previously had a successful career as a showjumper but took time away from riding to focus on his studies. In 2008 he graduated with a first class honors degree in economics, finance and German and was then offered a research scholarship which led to a PhD in business insol- vency laws. But the pull of the horse world drew him back in and in 2013 he returned his attention to horses and three-day eventing. “I’ve dreamt about a medal for the last six months,” he

says. “With a horse like this, you have to dream big. If you think you can’t do it, you don’t do it. [Winning a medal] has been on my mind since the beginning with him.” While Ingrid Klimke had hoped to add an individual gold

medal from WEG to the individual gold that she and Hale Bob OLD won at the Strzegom European Championships last year, she had to settle for individual bronze with a score of 27.3. The pair also earned Olympic team silver in 2016. “If someone would have told me I’d come here before and win individual bronze, I would have been very happy,” Ingrid says. “At the last rail, I was disappointed, but it was our only mistake.”

The daughter of famed dressage rider Reiner Klimke,

Ingrid competes in both international eventing and dres- sage and is well-known for her systematic, holistic training approach. She uses cavalletti for both her dressage and event horses, and even set up some exercises with caval- letti in the training ring at the WEG for a schooling session without stirrups, working on her horse’s basic training, overall strength and suppleness even as she prepared to go down the centerline at this major championship. She has competed in five Olympic Games and also won

team gold medals in 2008 and 2012 riding Butts Abraxxas. She credits the German team at this year’s World Eques- trian Games for giving her a strong feeling of support throughout the competition. “I was lucky to ride cross- country at the end of the day and my teammates helped me a lot,” she says. “We had a wonderful team spirit. I was lucky to be on the time on cross-country—he’s a fast horse and he loves to run--cross-country is his favorite!”

Dealing with Florence With Hurricane Florence bearing down on the Carolinas, dressage took place in the broiling sun, but cross-country day was graced with reasonably good weather in the “calm before the storm.” Organizers opted to reschedule Sunday’s
