DFDS to upgrade Norway offering 8

DFDS will expand its services between Norway, Zeebrugge and Immingham from February 2019. The route is currently served

by the side port/container vessel Lysbris Seaways, mainly shipping forest products, along with various types of container cargo. The improved route will be

served by a larger ro-ro vessel, Finlandia Seaways to carry additional traffic including

trailers, self-drives, machinery and a wider variety of project cargo.

Samskip launches Hull-Antwerp route

Samskip has launched a new service between Antwerp and Hull, its first to Belgium’s largest port. Initially, it will operate twice,

from 12 October, with a 508teu capacity vessel, sailing from ATO’s multimodal terminal on Tuesday and Saturday and ABP

Hull on Thursday and Monday. This new connection is in

addition to Samskip’s existing shortsea services connecting Rotterdam with Tilbury, Hull and Grangemouth (eight per week) and the recent three times weekly Amsterdam-Hull service. UK & Ireland regional director,

DFDS will add Brevik to the

route, in addition to the current ports of Fredrikstad and Halden,

Richard Beales commented: “In combination with our daily sailings to/from Rotterdam and following the successful launch of our three times weekly Amsterdam to Hull service in March, we are excited at the prospect of offering a new solution that can meet the requirements of the local and hinterland market in and around Antwerp, especially given the excellent rail and inland waterway links available.”

Immingham rail route to go high-cube

Work is underway to upgrade the rail route between Doncaster and Immingham for high-cube containers. Network Rail is partnering with the Humber LEP and North Lincolnshire Council to invest more than £15m to enlarge

TIR debuts in UAE and Pakistan

The first ever intermodal TIR operation

between the Gulf

Cooperation Council (GCC) and the EU was launched on 20 September when a container leſt the UAE bound for Europe under a single customs transit document and a single guarantee. It operated from the SAIF Zone in Sharjah and was bound for

Olomouc in the Czech Republic via Jebel Ali port in the UAE and Hamburg, Germany, travelling by land and sea using the TIR global customs transit and guarantee system. Preparations for roll-out

across all seven Emirates are proceeding, with plans for further TIR intermodal transport operations in the pipeline.

Pakistan TIR goes live

The Pakistan International Chamber of Commerce (PNC- ICC) issued the first TIR carnet to Pakistani transport operator, TCS Logistics on 12 October. It follows recent meetings in

Istanbul between Afghanistan and Pakistan where they agreed to initiate test operations from Karachi to Kabul and vice versa. There are now plans to use TIR on more transit routes from

neighbouring countries including Pakistan and Iran to Central Asia. Next steps include the

activation of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) under the TIR system, which will connect China with the Middle East and Africa. The Istanbul-Tehran-Islamabad

trade corridor saw the first inbound TIR operation from Iran to Pakistan earlier this year.

Network

Route managing director for Rail,

Rob McIntosh,

explained: “The northern Lincolnshire ports are an essential part of the freight network and this improved route will allow onward distribution from Doncaster

offering access to both the east and west shores of Osloford. There will be late-week

departures from Zeebrugge and Immingham with early-week arrivals in Norway, The enhanced service will replace the current ro-ro connection between Ghent and Brevik. DFDS adds that the reduced

southbound transit time opens the way for fresh fish exports from Norway to the Continent.

He added: “With the current

Brexit uncertainty we believe that our spread of dedicated short sea services can offer robust options for companies wanting to prepare by de-risking their supply chain.” Barge services are available

at the ATO terminal including five times per week to both Antwerp’s deep-sea container terminals via the Scheldt and to and from the LCT Liège Container Terminal.

to Scotland, the Midlands and beyond. This in turn will support the growth of local businesses at the ports and in the distribution network as well as preventing the need for goods to be transported on the road network.” ABP has announced a £36

million expansion plan at the port of Immingham, where box traffic has increased from 68,000 containers in 2013 to 183,000 in 2017.
