What has Palletways Iberia been doing in the past 12 months?

Palletways Iberia celebrated its 12th anniversary earlier this year, positioning itself as the leading express palletised freight distribution company in Spain and Portugal. The services offered on the

Iberian Peninsula are similar to other European countries where Palletways operates. However due to the network’s development and experience, Palletways Iberia

is

incorporating new services, both in terms of shipping and collection and delivery of goods. The

network currently has

a central hub in Madrid that covers the entire peninsula, and two regional hubs: one in Jaen, covering Andalusia, Murcia and Badajoz, and another in Zaragoza, which is also an international hub, covering the northeastern area

of the peninsula. We also cover the Balearic and Canary Islands through an extensive network of more than 65 members. Palletways Iberia’s staff team

consists of more than 70 people; however more than 500 people make up the entire network when considering all our members. More than 125 trunking vehicles

and 350 distribution vehicles use Palletways’ Iberian network on a daily basis. Four new megatrucks were recently introduced which have a 40-ton capacity, almost double the 24-ton capacity of a conventional truck. The megatrucks represent an ambitious commercial project to increase the efficiency of the network.

How has the Palletways network developed in Iberia?

We have more than 65 members in addition to the hubs in Madrid,

Warehouse property investor and developer P3 Logistic Parks has signed a deal aerospace firm Airbus for a new 31,280sq m bBuild-to-suit logistics hub at P3 Illescas park in Toledo, south of Madrid. Work will start on site before

The warehouse will incorporate several eco- friendly technologies, including LED lighting and improved thermal insulation for enhanced energy saving. said: “One of P3’s core strategic priorities is to work closely with our customers, supporting their business growth. Airbus is an important new customer for us. We are, therefore, delighted to be able to provide them with their new facility and look forward to developing a long and mutually beneficial partnership with them.” The new Airbus logistic hub will be the second P3 logistics warehouse in Illescas, where it now has close to 200,000sq m built or under development. P3 is currently offering a plot suitable for a new 53,000sq m build-to-suit logistics facility on the park. Ildefonso Alonso, who is

responsible for real estate at Airbus Spain, commented: “This logistic warehouse is an excellent demonstration of the collaboration and synergies to be obtained between the different Airbus organisations in Spain.”

Zaragoza and Jaen. Our objective from the beginning has been to find the best local logistics companies using a very strict and vigorous recruitment process. Through this, we ensure that we have the best members to develop our activity. We will also continue to increase our presence in areas where customers require it to continue improving our service.

How is the market in Iberia performing?

The market for the distribution of palletised express freight on the Iberian Peninsula is relatively young compared to other markets such as in the UK. It is however growing, and

customers are increasingly being offered alternatives for the shipment of their palletised goods. This has resulted in new competitors, not necessarily

specialists in the logistics sector. In this sense, it will be the market that identifies the needs and the degree of specialization that is needed, although the experience in the international field indicates that specialism is in high demand. Palletways Iberia is leading in the sector and maintains growth of more than 15% per year.

Is Palletways Iberia facing any

operational issues and how are you dealing with those issues?

The palletised freight market continues to evolve and, as in other sectors of the transport industry, tends to demand increasingly shorter delivery times for goods. In Iberia, the 24-hour Premium service is the most popular, with a 70% share. Despite these positive figures we must

continue to

improve our operations. Earlier this year, Palletways Iberia launched

the Pre-12 and Pre-14 services, which allow deliveries to be made before 12:00 and 14:00 respectively. We have also incorporated a

second archway scanner in the central hub of Madrid, improving the efficiency in trunk loading operations.

Plans for the future?

As the leading logistics company in the Iberian market, Palletways has a responsibility to remain at the forefront of developments in the sector. In this upcoming financial year (2018/19) we plan to open a

In addition to its comprehensive network of sailings between the UK, France and Spain, Brittany Ferries now operates a twice weekly return sailing between Cork and Santander.

This is the fi rst direct service between Ireland and Spain, with crossing times ideally suited to meet drivers’ hours regulations enabling them to take reduced weekly rest periods on board whilst their vehicle is still on the move. The route also offers an option to by-pass the UK land bridge and French driving restrictions , as well as providing increased security for your vehicle, goods and driver, all making a big difference to your transport costs. Drivers’ needs are taken care of on board, with excellent catering facilities and en-suite cabins

The ship, MV Connemara, is capable of carrying driver-accompanied vehicles, unaccompanied trailers, wheeled freight, abnormal loads (subject to clearance) and hazardous cargo (subject to compatibility).

Refrigerated units can also be carried with 80 on board ‘plug-in’ points available.

Furthermore, an additional weekly return sailing between Cork and Roscoff increases options for vehicle routing between Ireland and France.

This development increases the range of sailings on offer from Brittany Ferries who already provide up to 8 daily return sailings from the UK (Plymouth, Poole and Portsmouth) to France (Caen, Le Havre, Cherbourg, St Malo and Roscoff), complemented further by 9 return sailings between the same UK ports and northern Spain (Bilbao and Santander).

A guarantee of year-round freight capacity ensures that there is no better way to route your traffi c to and from continental Europe.
