Thrush affects more

than a million women The number of women in the UK thought to experience recurrent episodes of thrush is around 1.2 million, suggest University of Manchester scientists. And worldwide, as many as 138 million women may be affected. Vaginal thrush is a fungal

infection that’s easily treated with over-the-counter medicines, including creams, pessaries and oral capsules. If you have symptoms such as itching, soreness, pain or stinging during urination or sex, or a thick, creamy or watery white discharge, speak to your local Careway pharmacist in confidence today.

Late bedtime leads to

children eating poorly All parents know how important it is for their children to get good-quality sleep. But researchers from the University of South Australia have recently discovered that how well children sleep at night can affect how well they eat. Those who regularly go to bed

after 11pm may be four to five times more likely to eat fewer than three breakfasts a week, and two to three times more likely to eat junk food at least five times a week, the study suggests.

Fruit and veg linked with lower breast cancer risk

Women who eat high amounts of fruit and vegetables may have a lower risk of breast cancer compared with those who don’t eat much fruit and veg, say researchers writing in the International Journal of Cancer. By analysing information gathered

on more than 180,000 women, they found those eating more than 5.5 servings of fruit and veg a day were 11 per cent less likely to develop breast cancer than women eating 2.5 servings or less. The researchers hope these results

will encourage more women to increase their intake of fruit and veg.

App helps kids eat more veggies

fast fact It’s widely known that women have

more migraines than men. But Spanish researchers from Universitas Miguel Hernandez in Elche believe they’ve

discovered why – and it’s all to do with having higher levels of oestrogen and other sex hormones, they claim.

If your child is a fussy eater, psychologists from Aston, Loughborough and De Montfort Universities may be able to help. Fewer than one in 10 children in the

UK eat the recommended amount of vegetables, the experts claim. So they developed an app game called Vegetable Maths Masters for children between the ages of 3 and 7 years old. Depending on your child’s age the

app can help them count with vegetables, draw numbers with vegetables, add and subtract with

vegetables – and more. So as well as exposing them to vegetables in a fun way, it could improve their maths skills too. The app is available to download for

free from the Apple App Store and Google Play.
