I‘m constantly amazed at how natural environmental conditions can affect human mood. There can’t be many of us who don’t feel at least slightly uplifted by the sight of a clear blue sky, or by the warm feeling of the sun on our skin. So when skies are grey and there’s more than just a nip in the air, we shouldn’t be surprised if we feel a little grey too. Some people experience this phenomenon far more acutely

than others. I’ve seen this in my family, where one relative experiences an almost complete personality change when the

clocks go back. No longer the happy-go-lucky person they were in spring and summer, they have an irresistible urge to hibernate throughout the autumn and winter months. If you – or someone you know – feels the same, there’s a good chance you may

have seasonal affective disorder. SAD for short, it’s also sometimes called winter depression, because those who are affected by it tend to feel low when daylight is in short supply. This is one of the many winter-related health issues we’ve looked at in this issue

of All About Health. Read about how you can help relieve your SAD symptoms on page 19. This issue’s pages are full of advice and information to help keep you healthy

throughout the autumn and winter (including the festive season). And if you want to know about something we haven’t covered, just ask your friendly local Careway pharmacist.

Stay healthy Christine
