Flooding on the A20 London Road lastmonth
Early start hope for flood pump
THE installation of a flood preven- tion pump on theA20 inAylesford could start sooner than originally thought, becausework on theTon- bridge Road sinkhole looks likely to finish early. Thewaterdefence,which needs to
be installeddue to constant flooding on theA20 London Road, cannot be fitted until work has been com- pleted filling in the void on theA26. Kent County Council (KCC),
which previously estimatedtheA26 project would be completed by Oc- tober 20, claimed work was due to finish twoweeks ahead of schedule. KCC cannot close both roads due
to concerns aboutmajor traffic con- gestion, so this announcement could bring the work on the A20 forward andheraldthe endof the flooding in the area. The date for the work to begin in
Aylesford has not been announced, but with wetter weather due as au-
tumn turns intowinter, the installa- tion of the pump by KCC has be- comemore urgent. Neil Harris, clerk for Aylesford
parish council, said: “We haven’t heard officially about any end date for the sinkhole, or a start date for the pump, but we are in constant contactwith KCC. “The sooner the work begins, the
happier everyone will be.With re- centwetweather it has been horren- dous, and itwill only getworse.” Every time it rains, the area beside
theQuarryWood estate floods, as it did on September 23. A spokesman from Ditton Parish
Council said: “The A20 is always heavily congested, butwhen it rains and floods it is somuchworse. “We are desperate to get the
pump installed as soon as possible. We do take a number of calls from local residents complaining about the flooding because it is awful.”
Call to return council form
HOMEOWNERS in theMalling area who haven’t returned their council registration form could find an officer at their door. The Annual Household En-
quiry Formhas been delivered to homes by Royal Mail twice in August andSeptember,but some have failed to respond. Tonbridge and Malling Bor-
ough Council (TMBC) says the informationisnowneededtoup- date its Register of Electors and this month began sending voter registration officers out to help thosewho still haven’t replied. Julie Beilby, TMBC’s chief ex-
ecutive and electoral registration officer, said: “Completing the form is extremely important.We don’t get this information from
council tax records or from any other organisations soweneedto hear fromyou. “Each responsewe receivewill
save the council money, as we won’t need to send a voter regis- tration officer to your door, help- ing us to work in the most efficientway.” Residents must complete their
form, evenif there areno changes to their living arrangements, or they have voted recently. Homeowners can sign off their
forms if they do not need chang- ing online, by telephone (land- line calls are free) or by texting using the details on the form. Amendments canbemade online or by completing and returning the formintheprepaidenvelope.
