Broadcaster Clare to judge castle contest


TV SPORTS presenter Clare Bald- ing is to judge a children’swriting competitionto celebrateLeedsCas- tle’s 900th birthday next year. Shewill join castle chief executive


Sir David Steel and head of educa- tion at the treasure house, Helen Ellis, on the panel for the Big 900 StoryWriting Challenge. Two age groups – five to nine


years and 10-13 years – are encour- aged to write 900 words on the themes of castles and time travel. Entrieswill initially be shortlisted


by the castle’s educationdepartment before the official winners are se- lected by the panel. Thewinning storieswill beplaced


in a time capsule andburiedin front of the castle, to be opened 100 years from now, when the castle reaches itsmillennium. Ten finalists from each age cate-


gory, along with their families, will be invitedto an awardsday atLeeds Castle nextMay. Winners will receive a hamper of fun prizes, a glamping stay andfire-


works tickets. They will also be in- vited to join HRH Princess Alexan- dra for the official burial of the time capsule in June. There will be smaller prizes


awarded to all the runners up of the competition. One of Britain’s leading and


BAFTA-winning broadcasters,Clare is also a best-selling andaward-win- ning author of five books.


Author and broadcaster Clare Balding will be one of the judges of a children’s short story competition to mark the 900th birthday of Leeds Castle


She has also released two chil-


dren’s books aswell as a shortnovel, The Girl Who Thought She Was a Dog.  Budding young writers have until noon on March 5, 2019, to submit their stories. The competi- tion is open to anyone between the age of five and 13 on April 1 2019 and they must be a full-time resident of the UK.

were released in July, for baking to blogging and mindfulness to ani- mation, to bring the 90-year-old or- ganisation bang up to date. The groups from Girlguiding


Kent Weald, which include Loose Rainbows and 1st Maidstone and Tovil, used the facilities at the cas- tle to complete activities,which in- cluded meeting King Henry VIII and “Owlfie” the African Spotted Eagle Owl, as well as working to- gether to find their way out of the maze. The new guiding programme


falls into six newcategories - Skills for my Future, Have Adventures, Be Well, Know Myself, Express Myself and TakeAction. Mary Saunders, County Com-


missioner and organiser of the event at the castle on September 22, said: “It was fantastic to see some of our youngest members explore new activities and overcome chal- lenges throughout the day.”
