Town Talk
THE new Co-op store in Holbor- ough Road, Snodland, was opened on September 27 by a world champion strong man and an author. Rocky Troiani, who lives in
Chatham, takes part in strong- man events to raise money for charity. He recently pulled a 50- tonne articulated lorry arm over arm, breaking his own world record. At the Co-op, he was raising
funds for baby TJ, who is battling the only case of GM gangliosido- sis in England. He was assisted by Jan Lamb,
author of Angel of the Under- world, a book about her life with famous gangsters, including the Krays. Also helping out were pupils
from St Katherine's and the Church of England primary schools.
The Co-op with the Post Office
at 46 High Street was closed on September 22 and the one at 11 High Street was closed on Sep- tember 26.
The company acquired a 20-
year lease on the former Bull pub- lic house on the corner of the High Street and Holborough Road in 2014 when the pub

closed. Snodland Town Council welcomed the refurbishment of the old pub but objected to deliv- eries beingmade close to the bus stop in Holborough Road. The original planning applica-
tion to Tonbridge & Malling Bor- ough Council was for a loading bay in the car park at the back of the building, but
this was
changed. Wayne Mallard of Willowside,
Snodland, one of the many cus- tomers at the opening, said: "It was a shame when the Bull closed as it was such a centre part of the town. In the end, due to hold ups it looked like a shell of its former self. “But now it has been trans-
formed into this impressive Co- op, with self-scanning and more parking space and I am sure many people will be impressed by it."
Cake, coffee and a race to help charity
Tommy tribute SNODLAND Town Council and the Snodland Partnership are buying two “Tommy” silhou- ettes as part of the “There But Not There” campaign to mark the centenary of the end of WWI. The silhouettes, which will be
placed on each side of the Cenotaph in the cemetery, are to commemorate those who died in the war. The national campaign aims to educate all generations, but particularly the young, born nearly 100 years after the outbreak of the war, to help them understand what led to the deaths of 888,246 British and Common- wealth personnel.
SNODLAND Church of England Primary School has held a highly-successful annual Macmillan Cancer Support cof- fee morning and sponsored run on September 28. Sophie Bishopp, the school’s
charity co-ordinator, said it was the fifth year they had held the
successful event. She said: “This year was ex-
tremely busy, with many fami- lies and friends coming to buy cakes and raise money for such a worthy charity. It is al- ways successful and is such a lovely way to spend time with our parents. We haven't col-
lated a final figure yet. Our school is very supportive of charity events and has helped to raise lots of money over the past years.” All the children in the school
took part in the run which was sponsored by parents, families and friends.
Cash to tackle underage drinking
THE Snodland Community Alco- hol Partnership (CAP) will have a stall at the switching-on of the Christmas lights in the High Street on December 1. The group, which has been
running since 2012, aims to pre- vent underage drinking and pro- mote responsible drinking amongst young adults. CAP works with all the li- censed premises in the town, as
well as The Holmesdale School, the town council, medical cen- tre, police, trading standards, the Kenward Trust and housing groups. Alison Finch, the Safer and
Stronger CommunitiesManager, told the Snodland Partnership that part of the CAP includes having a visible presence at key stages of the year to prevent proxy sales of alcohol and to
raise awareness of the harms of underage drinking. In order to raise awareness of
underage drinking and to pro- mote the message of underage drinking CAP would like to raise funds for a professional mixolo- gist on the stall, to show resi- dents how to make alcohol-free “mocktails”. The Partnership agreed to a request of £295 from CAP.
