UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA HOTSON ARCHITECTURE & RYDER ARCHITECTURE


Hotson Architecture and Ryder Architecture have been selected to design a new “gateway” student residence on Student Union Boulevard at the University of British Columbia Point Grey campus in Vancouver. The new $108m residence building will provide 1,000 beds for upper year students, and contribute to the rejuvenation of the intersection at the north west corner of Wesbrook Mall and Student Union Boulevard that includes existing student service areas, student residences and a large mixed used academic and student housing hub. “The project will introduce more of a urban development around the existing Gage Residences, which will address, reinforce, and animate the street frontages along Student Union Boulevard and Wesbrook Mall,” said Kai Hotson, principal, Hotson Architecture. The residence will consist of a number of buildings, totalling an area of approximately 395,000 ft2 break ground in the spring of 2019 with a targeted opening date of 2021.

NINGBO IF MALL, HONG KONG BENOY


Benoy has announced its second project with Hong Kong China Travel Service (HKCTS) – the Ningbo ‘If mall’, a “future community-focused” retail and commercial destination whose design has been recently unveiled to the public. The development is situated in the Jiangbei district of Ningbo on a plot bordered by Changxing Road, Hongtu Road and West North Ring Road. Benoy’s design is comprised of three major blocks covering an approximate gross floor area of 46,000 m2


. The


planning regulations required strong interfacing with the surrounding urban areas. Benoy’s approach resulted in an L-shaped layout with a continuous green, urban space woven throughout. The masterplan has ensured the retail frontage gains exposure along the well developed Hongtu and Changxing Roads while the commercial business zone interfaces with the green, urban park on the west side of the plot. To ensure continuity throughout the design, the facades of the buildings display a “unique linear form which reference Ningbo’s identity as a coastal city”. As part of its extensive offerings, ‘If mall’ will include a sports club, retail, supermarket, cinema, a children’s entertainment and education area as well as the commercial business centre. The development also interfaces with a neighbouring residential scheme also owned and developed by HKCTS.


SYDNEY FOOTBALL STADIUM, AUSTRALIA BATES SMART


The New South Wales State Government is proposing to demolish the main Sydney Football Stadium in Sydney’s south-eastern suburbs and replace it with a new stadium on the same site at a cost of $705m. However, following “broad public opposition to the proposal, based on the wasteful use of government funds to demolish and rebuild”, architects Bates Smart have revealed an alternative proposal which involves constructing a 45,000-seat stadium over the rail yards of Sydney’s Central Station. Philip Vivian, director of Bates Smart, commented on the firm’s alternative proposal for the stadium: "We propose that Moore Park Stadium’s replacement be built over Central Station’s railyard; creating the benefits of public transport accessibility, catalysing the development of the railyards to connect Surry Hills to Chippendale, and having broader economic benefits for the state, the city and surrounding neighbourhoods.”
