Zaha Hadid Design was commissioned by JCDecaux to “redefine the design language of billboards, and provide a unique communica- tions channel in the capital that integrates contemporary design and digital media.” The Kensington, located on West

RIBA launches consultation on new fire safety guidance

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has launched a consultation on a new RIBA Plan of Work for Fire Safety. Following the devastating fire at Grenfell Tower in June last year, the RIBA said it has consistently called for changes to building regulations including the strengthening of requirements on cladding, sprinklers and means of escape, and clarification on the responsibilities of those who design, construct and manage buildings.

ture. Set in an area that has been landscaped to enhance the local environment with the planting of trees and greenery, The Kensington features integrated lighting that increase visibility for pedestrians. “Both a civic gesture and a promotional medium, the intertwined, looped ribbon design expresses the dynamism of pedestrian and vehicle traffic movements that intersect at this important London junction,” said Melodie Leung, senior associate at Zaha Hadid Design. “The

Fire Safety’, which was commissioned by the Government following the Grenfell Tower fire and published earlier this year, she called for “greater transparency, accountability and collaboration” from industry; the RIBA said the new Plan of Work for Fire Safety “directly addresses this call”. The document’s ‘best practice process map’ has been designed to make clear the roles, responsibilities and deliverables for fire safety at each stage of a building’s lifecycle. It “places Hackitt Review recom- mendations within a recognised industry framework,” and has been designed to apply to a wider range of building types and scales. Fire safety considerations will be embedded from the start by involving Building Control, the Fire and Rescue Authority, building managers and tenants more closely from an early stage. The RIBA added: “Following the document’s recommended process will strengthen project team accountability through new statutory duties based on the

stainless steel ribbon twists as it encircles the screen, defining a varying silhouette when seen from different viewpoints.” “It will be fascinating to see how brands respond to this sculptural digital canvas. This has been a unique collaboration with JCDecaux to develop new possibilities for media platforms; reimagining the billboard as public art,” continued Leung. Spencer Berwin co-CEO of JCDecaux: “Design is at the heart of JCDecaux’s DNA, and we are proud to have worked in partnership with Zaha Hadid Design to bring this exceptional vision for a contemporary advertising structure to London. This project underlines how JCDecaux works with the world’s leading designers to transform cityscapes for the benefit of the public and the clients.” “We would like to pay tribute to Zaha Hadid’s commitment to design excellence and to her team for bringing our joint vision to fruition and to thank our launch partners for their commitment to this unique new advertising structure. We’re delighted to have Audi and Coty as our first brand partners, using this powerful new platform as part of their launch strategy for the Audi Q8 and CK Women,” said Berwin.

CDM 2015 model. The rigorous review and sign off procedures, and independent inspection, will also help to safeguard fire safe specification and detailing.” RIBA director of practice Lucy Carmichael said: “The Plan of Work for Fire Safety is a vital resource for design and construction teams and building owners, providing much needed clarity on fire safety roles and responsibilities at every stage of the process. We cannot wait for longer term regulatory change to come into force, the construction industry needs immediate guidance. I encourage all RIBA members and other industry professionals to provide detailed feedback on this draft document, which we hope will be an important step to further strengthen consideration of fire safety in all aspects of building design, procurement, construction and maintenance.” The consultation for the draft RIBA
