Rugby 7s players show great sportsmanship

Date:Wednesday 15th March 2017 Venue: Royal Wootton Bassett Rugby Club.

Sun was shining and despite the recent weather the pitches were in good condition at the Royal Wootton Bassett Rugby Club’s new ground which is a perfect venue for such a competitions.

10 schools took part from across the county and were separated into two Pools for the round robin style competition. Schools included: St Johns, St Laurence, Wyvern, Hardenhuish, Commonweal, Stonehenge, St Augustine’s, Bishops Wordsworth, Sheldon and Lydiard Park Academy. Pool 1 was really close between the top 3 teams and the outcome wasn’t known until the final game so adding tension and excitement to this stage of the competition. Pool 2 saw Hardenhuish School move through the games undefeated and win their place in the next round quite convincingly, although St John’s Academy gave them a run for their money and the game was close. The play off for first place was really exciting and was only decided by a single try scored in the dying seconds. Unfortunately Wyvern were unable to come due to mini bus issues so their place in the play-offs was taken by the ‘Barbarians’, a team made up of players from every other school. School values of Determination, Team Work, Passion, Self-Belief and Honesty were very much in evidence throughout the day, along with great sportsmanship.

Thank you to: Frank Butler and Steve Barber from the RFU. The Young Leaders came from Year 10 RWBA and were brilliant, really professional and focused. They all enjoyed it and one said “it would help to improve my own game of rugby”.

Fantastic Teamwork at the Hockey competition

Date: Thursday 23rd March 2017 Venue: The Corsham School

9 Primary School teams entered from across the county including; Oare, Holt, Winterslow, Crudwell, Oakhurst,Ramsbury, The Mead, Broad Chalke and Nursteed. Using two pitches there were two groups playing a round robin format. On pitch 1 there was a tie for the first place in the group and there were lots of cheers when the teams heard they were through to the final and play off for 3rd and 4th places. Crudwell School were working really well as a team and they had such belief in themselves that they went into the final against Ramsbury.

It was a really great competition with all schools enjoying themselves irrespective if they were winning or not. A credit to their teachers for encouraging them to work as a team and to support each other.

Thank you to: Young leaders from The Corsham School were great at officiating and making sure all the scores were recorded and teams were in the right place at the right time. They were very helpful, mature and supported the umpires who were; Chuck the County Hockey umpire secretary, Jackie and Caroline from Corsham Hockey Club, Sam from Devizes Hockey Club and Verity Longfield from England Hokcey who ran

the event on the day. Thanks to them all for giving up their time and making the event run so smoothly.

Spring had sprung at the Hi 5 Primary Netball

Date: Monday 3rd April 2017 Venue: Sheldon School, Chippenham

Bright sunshine welcomed 11 primary schools to this year’s Level 3 County School Games Netball Finals. Having qualified from their respective local rounds, the 11 schools who had travelled from all across Wiltshire, were placed into two pools where they would play a round robin competition to see who would qualify for the semi- final playoffs and then the final.

Pool A: Coombe Bissett, Grange, Larkhill, Minety, Shaw and Woodborough.

Pool B: All Cannings, Covingham Park, New Forest, Ramsbury, Wansdyke

The afternoon was full of cheering and great team spirit from the players on and off the court and every team played with passion and enthusiasm whilst they proudly represented their school. Regardless of the result, the players

showed true sportsmanship with three cheers being held after every game! Following the pool rounds, the semi- finals took place with Shaw taking on Covingham Park and New Forest taking on Coombe Bissett. All four teams played with real determination, so much so that the semi-final between New Forest and Coombe Bissett ended up being decided on golden goal following a draw after extra time, with Coombe Bisset just managing to secure their goal first!

Thank you to: Mo Squires, the Chair of Wiltshire County Netball Association and the team of volunteers from Wiltshire County Netball Association who did a fantastic job organising the event and officiating the competition.

The event would not have been possible without all their hard work leading up to the day and for them giving up their time to support the Young Leaders from years 10 & 11 from Sheldon School; who themselves were incredibly helpful and mature in their approach to the young players and teachers at the event.

Emily Harrison, Avon and Wiltshire’s Netball Development Officer from England Netball commented, “This year’s Hi 5 event was the most competitive we’ve had in recent years. There was some lovely netball on show throughout the day and some incredibly close games that had all the supporters, teachers and team mates watching, holding their breath! It was great to see such wonderful team work and camaraderie throughout all the teams that took part – the young players were a credit to their schools. A special mention and thanks goes to the young leaders who supported the day and to the wonderful army of volunteers who ran the day so well!”
