North Wiltshire School Sports Cluster

My name is Phil Smith and I am the School Sport Co-ordinator for the North Wilts School Sports Cluster. The NWSC formed in 2011 and consists of 13 schools:

Ashton Keynes Primary, Bradon Forest Secondary, Broad Hinton Primary, Broad Town Primary, Noremarsh Junior, Longleaze Primary, Lydiard Millicent Primary, Lyneham Primary, St Bartholomews Primary, St Mary’s Primary, St Sampson’s Primary, Wootton Bassett Infant

Each of these schools have a Primary Link Teacher (PLT) who meets each term to celebrate success and develop sporting opportunities for our children! Since 2011 we have welcomed over 4500 children to our festivals and competitions. We have 17 events each year including; Football, Netball, Hockey, Dance, Gym, Cricket, Athletics, Orienteering, Swimming and FUNs festivals based on Agility, Balance Coordination. Some of our festivals lead onto Level 3 School Games competitions.

We also train a cohort of Young Leaders (P10s) each year who are an integral part of running our calendar

of events. They lead, umpire, officiate, score, referee, time keep, film, coach and make sure those taking part are safe and have lots of fun. Our “Power of 10” Young Leaders have gained recognition locally and further afield with some going on to gain NGB qualifications and others volunteering for their respective sports clubs!

At NWSC we aim to;

• increase sporting opportunities for our pupils during and out of school hours

• bring cluster schools together for participation, enjoyment and competition in physical education

• link up with community clubs and National Governing Bodies to create a pathways for success

• identify professional development expertise & needs within the cluster and lead on innovative CPD opportunities for all staff within the cluster of schools

The children’s learning in Physical Education is at the centre of everything we do!

Last year’s Big Pledge: Road to Rio challenge saw 47 schools and over 15,000 pupils taking part. In 2017, the Big Pledge: London Calling Challenge offers schools the opportunity to once again engage their pupils in physical activity, increase awareness of world class events taking place in the U.K. and link curriculum work such as maths and geography to the challenge making it easier for children to learn while having fun.

Participating schools in 2016 included Shrewton Primary School who said, “We had regular assemblies to guess where we were in the world and pupils were able to have a guess and talk about the country where we currently were after each week. It also gave them an incentive to keep going and reach the goal. The children are a lot more active with many now walking to school.”

Sutton Veny Primary School stated, “We set up a 500m course on our school field and the children recorded how many they did each day. The staff also got involved, as did visitors to the school. Apart from the obvious physical benefits, there were many social benefits too, especially for those children who sometimes find social times of the day a challenge. The chance to walk and talk really helped them. The challenge also built a sense of contribution towards a bigger goal, which helped pull the school together as a team and instilled a sense of what can be achieved together.” The Manor School in Melksham reported, “The pupils have been learning about the Olympics. They have studied the history of the Olympics, the underpinning

Wiltshire and Swindon Relay 19

values & principles and about the different range of competitive sports. They pledged to walk at least 1 km 3 times a week prior to lessons and to undertake additional walks during playtime and lunchtimes. They have enjoyed the time together walking and talking to each other and on some mornings listening and dancing to music as they walk! This time has helped children develop their social and emotional wellbeing as they are learning to socialise in a different way than they would at lunchtime or playtime.”

We are urging schools to step up to the challenge to get up, get out and have fun while gaining the benefits of taking part. Schools can sign up now at www.wiltshire.gov.uk/bigpledge or email bigpledge@wiltshire.gov.uk
