Sportivate creating opportunities for young people Cricket thrives in Melksham

Melksham Cricket Club used to have a very strong youth section but over the years it had slowly dwindled. They were looking to recruit more young people. Melksham Cricket Club wanted to build a relationship with Melksham Oak

Secondary School staff and students alike to promote not only cricket and the club itself. It was recognised that the pupils at the secondary school are the next generation of cricketers in Melksham and they needed to make sure the club would be sustainable and be able to keep going for many years to come.

Wiltshire and Swindon Sport (WASP) were able to help the club and school link by introducing them and using some of the Sportivate funding from Sport England to enable the Club and School to provide an after school session once a week between 3pm- 4pm. It is for mixed gender cricket coaching from Kwik Cricket to simple cricket skills (batting, bowling, fielding,

catching etc). The sessions were run from January till the end of March every Tuesday.

The Sportivate programme gives 11-25 year-olds who are not particularly sporty access to six-to-eight weeks' of free or subsidised coaching in a range of sports. Last year these sessions where attended by 7-9 players, this year they had over 30 names of 11yr+ both boys

and girls, sign up to have a go at cricket. Through this successful programme Melksham Cricket Club have now built a strong relationship with the school and its students.

Sportivate making a difference to young peoples lives

order to mentor and support them to a more positive future and continued participation in sport. Each session would be in a 2 hour block and a 6 week programme would consist of 3 x 2 hour blocks of engagement. Each 2 hour block would include; free equipment hire, free entry to the Skate Warehouse, free Skate/ BMX instruction and due to the target audience we would also look to provide; warm refreshments and a support pack containing; emergency food and information on exit routes to continue with physical activity.

The BMX & Skate Project offers a relaxed no pressure environment for those young people who are inactive or new to the sports, with staff engaging supporting and offering skate/ BMX instruction for the young people that attend. In this safe and warm environment we would look to connect with participants to build trust in

12 Wiltshire and Swindon Relay

Skate Jams started in 2014 under Sportivate and are aimed at giving young people in Swindon a chance to get involved in alternative sports provision. These have been extremely popular and some of the young people that have attended have been dealing with other challenges and this has been an outlet for them to have some fun and meet other people. They have seen 61 participants including both males and females between the ages of 16-25.The project ran over 3x2 hour blocks between the 12/01/2017 and

the 16/03/2017.This has really helped strengthened the partnership with the ATB warehouse, the young people of Swindon and other community groups.

Many of the young people have continued with alternative sports after

these sessions with peers or on their own. They join in with the Skate, Scoot, & BMX sessions in Swindon.
