for all ages with senior, junior, mini and ladies. The 1st team play in the Eastern Counties Greene King Division Three South which is a highly com- petitive league with away trips to local rivals Woodbridge and Ipswich amongst

visits to

places further afield such as: Clacton, Colchester, Maldon, Stowmarket, Mistley & Mer- sea Island. The move to King Fields made the home matches more accessible to a larger crowd, as a result the team is very well supported. Part of the attraction of mov-

ing to this site was the pavil- ion. This had been empty for a while but extensive renova- tions have given the club facil- ities to be proud of.

In addition to providing a

secure base for the rugby club to build, the hope is to grow interest in the sport locally. With the increased participa- tion in grass roots youth rugby

you never know, perhaps the next Jonny Wilkinson, Sarah Hunter or Maro Itoje (one for the younger readers) is some- where amongst us! Aldeburgh Rugby Football

Club are always looking for new players and welcome any- one who is interested to con- tact the club. Likewise, any members of the community who would like to get involved with the club either as a sup- porter, volunteer or fundraiser please come along and have a chat.

This is a superb local club run by passionate and dedi- cated members. It can only be good for the community to have these new facilities and opportunities at the heart of Aldeburgh. So make sure you get up to the fields throughout the course of the season to sup- port your local side in the Green King League.

SUFFOLK’S leading food & drink festival celebrates its 13th year, championing

ducers and hosting expert chefs and food writers.

local pro- Aldeburgh

Food & Drink Festival is taking place over the weekend of Sep- tember 29th and 30th.

The popular food festival is

held in the historic and beautiful setting of Snape Maltings, the home of Aldeburgh Music. The festival is not for profit and widely acknowledged as one of the best in Britain, celebrating the very best of the county’s produce, farmers, growers, food and drink. The festival, which aims to encourage

a connection between people and the envi-

ronment they live in, will be hosting a Wild Suffolk area where you can learn about for- aging, open-fire cooking, fish- ing, game and the wildlife of Suffolk, as well as the Adnams Drinks Experience led by beer expert Melissa Cole and the Hillfarm Family Meadow. East Anglia is known for its abundance of fantastic quality produce, the landscape provid- ing the perfect environment for a variety of different harvest. The role Suffolk plays in pro- viding the rest of England with this produce

is apparent

throughout the festival. Time for Change The festival this year begins with the return of the Aldeburgh

Food & Drink Festival Confer- ence, titled An Appetite for Change, Eating Wisely and Well, taking place on Friday 28th September. Chaired by radio presenter Bill Turnbull, speakers taking part will explore the role of trends in food con- sumption; the local food econo- my;

and the relationship

between diet and health; and include experts from various sectors including health, medi- cine, science, farming, environ- ment, community and the food industry. Food writer, journalist, historian and author Bee Wilson will be taking part as well as chef and restaurateur Thomasi- na Miers. Visiting Chefs and Speakers

The festival welcomes a host of the country’s leading chefs who will give cooking demon- strations. This year, the festival celebrates a variety of eclectic talent from across the food industry who will be hosting thought-provoking talks, cook- ery demonstrations and master- classes. This year’s chefs include the

unstoppable Dan Doherty (pre- viously of Duck & Waffle) and current judge of BBC’s Britain’s Best Home Cook, bringing his charm and talent to Aldeburgh before embarking on his next restaurant project later this year, best-selling author and chef, Melissa Helmsley, the award- winning chef and restaurateur behind Gorgeous Kitchen, Sophie Michell, Indian chef and food writer Maunika Goward- han and 2018 Masterchef win-

ner, Kenny Tutt. Chef, restaura- teur and food writer Thomasina Miers returns to Aldeburgh this year, hosting a discussion with restaurateur, broadcaster, cook- ery writer and caterer, Prue Leith. Also returning are Guard- ian columnist and influencer Rosie Birkett, Dhruv Baker, Chetna Makan, Tim Anderson, Thuy Pham from The Little Viet Kitchen and Michelin-starred Norfolk chef Galton Blackiston. The Best of the Region Each year Aldeburgh Food & Drink Festival champions the region’s finest artisan food and drink producers,

dedicating

space for both traditional pro- ducers and also new and inno- vative producers. This year includes another stellar line-up, including Suffolk raw milk and cheese

producer, Fen Farm Dairy, start-up brewery Amper-

sand Brew Co, vodka and gin distillery Flint & Hardings, a Suffolk distillery which uses locally farmed sugar beet and botanicals and Truly Traceable, award-winning, artisan game pies made in Halesworth. The Festival is followed by two weeks of “Fringe Events” September 29th – October 14th. These include farm walks,

special dinners, talks, meet-the- producer events and much

more. For full details of both Festi-

val and Fringe visit www.alde- burghfoodanddrink.co.uk. Festival tickets can be pur- chased online in advance or at the
