Free hearing checks in Aldeburgh to help those with hearing loss

TEN million people in the UK - one in six of us - have some degree of hearing loss. It’s sur- prisingly tricky to spot gradual hearing loss as our brains are very good at compensating, so we’re not even aware of how

much we’ve lost until things are quite far advanced.

The good news is that there

are things you can do to about it. The bad news is that there are potentially serious consequenc- es if you choose to ignore hear-

ing loss, including an increased risk of dementia. Local hearing care specialists

The Hearing Care Centre, offers award winning hearing care ser- vices from 25 centres across East Anglia. This year they are celebrating their 20th year in business and they hope to con- tinue to raise awareness about the prevalence of hearing loss, its effect on everyday life and the potential dangers of leaving hearing loss untreated. Audiologist Karen Finch and

her team will be holding a free ‘Hearing Care Centre Open Day’ at their local hearing clinic at Aldeburgh & District Com- munity Hospital between 9am and 5pm on Wednesday 26th September. During the event they will be providing free hear- ing assessments (usually £20), along with complimentary pro- fessional advice about your hearing test results and discuss- ing possible solutions that could help improve your hearing. All services are

available by

appointment only. To book your appointment

Friends of the Suffolk Regiment Leiston Branch OCA

AT our September meeting we are planning an afternoon of tea and scones to encourage new faces to come and join us to keep the interest in the Suffolk Regiment tradition alive. We see it as a responsibility of ours to remember all those who gave so much to keep our country free, and to preserve their standards and mementoes for future genera- tions. So, if you think you would like to

join us, do come along to the Com- munity Centre to show your sup- port, and bring family and friends to our next gathering on the afternoon

of Thursday 6th September, from 2pm to 4pm – tea and scones will be available for our ‘party’ launch of ‘The Friends’, and we would love to see you again. This is possibly the last chance to show your support, so if for any reason you are unable to join us on that date, please let us know of your interest. Please get in touch with Alf Wat-

son on 01728 831281, or you can email me on jimtaylor914@gmail. com We look forward to hearing from you.

God bless. Jim Taylor

Alde Valley Suffolk Family History September Talk

AFTER a pause for the peak sum- mer holiday period in August, the next meeting of the Alde Valley Suffolk Family History Group will be on Monday 17th September, when Pip Wright will give a talk entitled ‘Witches in and around Suffolk’.

For as long as history itself, we’ve been a superstitious lot in East Anglia. It is nearly 300 years since our elected representatives told us to stop persecuting witches, but old habits die hard. After all, if the Bible and Shakespeare recog- nised witches, who are we to dis- agree? The trouble is, in a confus- ing world, it is comforting in a way

to have an explanation for the inex- plicable. Be it sickness or infesta- tion, storm, blight or sudden death, then sorcery could just be the answer. A whole folk-lore has grown up around the ‘wise ones’ of Suffolk, so that in most of our towns and villages, you can still find someone who will tell you tales of their local ‘witch’. But truth to tell, the history of witchcraft in and around Suffolk is an altogether darker story, about suffering, perse- cution and death. It reached into the hearts of families and communities and created a fear and a hysteria that lasted until recent times.

Pip is a retired primary school

teacher, living in Stowmarket, who writes local history books and gives talks to groups of all kinds and all ages across East Anglia. Together with his late wife Joy, who died in July 2005, he has spent a number of years gathering information on Suf- folk’s social history. The talk will be held at the Unit- ed Church, High Street, Leiston, IP16 4EL, and will start at 7.30pm. Everyone is welcome; admission costs £1 for members and £3 for non-members, including coffee/tea and biscuits. Parking is available in the adjacent Co-op car park, but you will need to register your car number in-store or face the risk of a £100 fine. We look forward to welcoming

you to what promises to be a most interesting evening in the hands of another entertaining speaker.
