FASHION

Cité Internationale de la Dentelle et de la Mode de Calais Calais

Cosying up to the waterfront, the Calais Lace Museum is a sight to behold, its exterior rippling with the textural bumps, dips and patterns of punched cards from the historic Jacquard loom. Inside, a modern layout amplifi es the items on display: patterned dresses and ladies’ fans; touch screens and swatch books. The better part of an afternoon can be spent poring over the delicate cuts and leafi ng through fl oral sketches, absorbing the complex history of this sadly dwindling craft. Don’t miss a demonstration by one of the museum’s resident experts – there’s nothing quite like watching a master at work, studiously looping natural and synthetic strings onto the machines. These industrial giants were smuggled over from Nottingham in the early 19th century to avoid taxes, and the good people of Calais and Caudry have been keeping them running ever since. www.cite-dentelle.fr

Fondation Pierre Bergé – Yves Saint Laurent Paris

The inspirational legacy of the late Yves Saint Laurent and his partner Pierre Bergé is upheld in this tribute museum, which only opened last year. Around 5,000 haute couture garments and 15,000 accessories are conserved here, as well as concept sketches, photographs and other items detailing Saint Laurent’s creative processes throughout his ground-breaking career. The inaugural temporary exhibition ends in September and will be followed by L’Asie rêvée d’Yves Saint Laurent. www.fondation-pb-ysl.net

Musée des Dentelles et Broderies de Caudry Caudry

Caudry is the second of two lacemaking hubs in France (after Calais) and its signature museum, operating out of the lace factory of Théophile and Jean-Baptiste Carpentier, is a wonderful tribute to the art. The attractive red-brick and glass building contains a sumptuous array of dresses and embroidery, and the reconstructed workshop and historical titbits throughout make this a fun, educational day out for the whole family. Expect oodles of glamour too. After all, Caudry’s lacemakers export their intricate creations to top designers around the world. They even supplied the lace for Kate Middleton’s iconic wedding dress! musee-dentelle.caudry.fr
