MUSEUMS 2018 THE GUIDE
Musée de La Cour d’Or – Metz Métropole Metz
The ‘Golden Court’ Museum stands right in the heart of Metz on a site that has long played a central role in the city’s history. The court’s Gallo-Roman thermal baths, ancient church, medieval granary and 17th-century staircase are all used to show off the temporary and permanent art collections to unique effect. Metz is famed for its ancient and medieval history and the museum celebrates this rich heritage, as well as incorporating the archaeological fi nds of digs during a phase of urban development around the turn of the 20th century.

Musée de la Tapisserie de Bayeux Bayeux
The ‘Cloth of the Conquest’ is surely the single most important artefact in Anglo-French history, depicting, in often very raw

detail, the momentous events of 1066. It has recently been promised to Britain on loan, in what British Museum director Hartwig Fischer described as “a major loan, probably the most signifi cant ever from France to the UK”. For the time being, however, as has been the case for the past 950 years, you will have to retrace William’s route across the Channel to see it.

The Juno Beach Centre in Normandy is devoted to the Canadian soldiers who fought in the Second World War and, pertinently, to those 45,000 who lost their lives in the confl ict. As well as presenting plain facts about the war, the museum intimately touches upon the real lives of the soldiers through
The Battle of Fromelles in July 1916 was the fi rst major battle fought by Australian troops on the Western Front. It claimed nearly 8,500 lives in less than 24 hours, most of them from the Allied Forces. Established next to the Pheasant Wood Military Cemetery, where a mass grave was uncovered in 2008 (and later exhumed, reburied and
restored), the Battle of Fromelles Museum presents a series of displays and projections supported by recovered artefacts, and is guaranteed to fascinate as well as educate. ❯❯
