MUSEUMS 2018 THE GUIDE

BOURGOGNE-FRANCHE-COMTÉ THE CITY OF DIJON PRESENTS THE EXHIBITION

A LAND OF PREHISTORY

FROM JUNE 9 TO NOVEMBER 5 2018

Trouble on the tracks at the Automaton Museum of Souillac

and scans the room, whilst a little girl, whose face is far from fine, hops over a skipping rope… except her feet never touch the ground. Welcome to the museum of automatons, a portal to the uncanny valley, boasting a collection of 300 mechanical toys from the 19th and 20th centuries. As compelling as it is disquieting, this window into the past is exciting for imaginative children and adults alike. www.musee-automate.fr

Musée des Vampires Les Lilas

Fan(g)s of all things Dracula will adore this cabinet of curiosities in Paris’s eastern suburbs. Privately run out of the curator’s own home, this macabre museum invites guests (by appointment only, we should add) to marvel at Jacques Sirgent’s collection of blood- sucker paraphernalia, from antique literature and movie posters to a mummified cat and vampire protection kit from the 1800s! With such a wealth of relics to examine, bolstered by Sirgent’s seemingly inexhaustible knowledge of the shadowy netherworld, a short spell here is truly unforgettable – and not for the faint of heart. artclips.free.fr/musee_des_ vampires/MuseeVampires1

Musée du Tire-Bouchon Ménerbes

Aimed at oenophiles or kitchen utensil fanatics (or indeed both), we’re not really sure, but the

Vaucluse département’s Musée du Tire-Bouchon certainly puts a new twist on the idea of a museum. More than 1,200 corkscrews are displayed within this sanctum, held at the lovely Domaine de la Citadelle wine estate, with the oldest artefact hailing from the tail-end of the 17th century in France – not long after the first corkscrews were made in England. The collection boasts some

particularly colourful items, from animal bottle-openers with twisty screw tails to one quirky handle shaped like a fist. There’s also scope to indulge in a guided tour of the cellars (with tasting provided, naturally). As esoteric museums go, this is a real corker. www.museedutirebouchon.com

Naïa Museum Rochefort-en-Terre

Morbihan is steeped in myth, notably tales surrounding its megalithic standing stones and Brocéliande Forest of Arthurian legend, so it seems a fitting choice for a space decked out with otherworldly art. Named after a local witch from the early 20th century, the Naïa Museum in Rochefort-en-Terre houses a collection of sci-fi and fantasy works by modern artists whose niches lie in the unconventional. It’s easy to get lost in this deliciously dark realm of sculpture, paintings, comics, graphic art, illustrations and video, showcasing a handful of today’s wildest imaginations. www.naiamuseum.com FT
