AUGUST 2018 THE RIDER /49
Catching Up With Ruth Armstrong And Armstrong Farms
By Kelly Bowers Since she was a teenager, Ruth
Armstrong has lived on and owned farms in the UK, USA, and for many years now, in Canada. Her love of equestrian sport was culti- vated in her native Great Britain. While working as a corporate ex- ecutive, she competed internation- ally in both show jumping and eventing. In 1996, Ruth, who moved to
Mono, ON, became well known as an accomplished competitor in eventing and show jumping and as a Level 2 Jumping coach. She also sat as President of the Ontario chapter of the Canadian Warm- blood Horse Breeders Association (CWHBA ) for a time. Among other accomplishments, she was named the Ontario Horse Trials Association’s Leading Female Rider in 2007 and 2008. Ruth has owned and operated
Armstrong Farm for over 20 years. She has bred, trained, and sold horses at all levels from young foal to Olympic short list, and now has her eighteen year old daughter, Tiffany working with her.
Armstrong Farm has built a
superb reputation for their breed- ing program of proven Selle Fran- cais bloodlines producing about ten foals per season which Ruth also trains, debuting a new crop of talented youngsters for sale each spring. She also trains and cam- paigns external stallions & young stock on request. Armstrong has bred and produced the highest scoring stallion in his licensing, P.S. I Love You. With her long- time coach Garry Roque, she also reached the highest levels with her stallions, Ilian de Taute, French- man and VDL Ulando H. Then, a couple years ago, for
a fun adventure and change of pace, Ruth and Tiffany joined a new equestrian sport; Actually, it’s quite an old equestrian sport. Mother and daughter are learning how to play polo. They’ve joined the ranks of the Buffalo Polo club which is operated by the Van der Burgt family. Their head coach is Phil Van der Burgt, a professional polo player, polo horse breeder and trainer. So, it looks like Ruth and Tiffany are in the best of hands. This will be Ruth’s first year
of competitive sanctioned polo and readers will have the pleasure of following her Buffalo Polo Club exploits in a new column she will be writing for each issue of The Rider, starting in our next paper (September 2018). Obviously, with her many
years of experience, Ruth knows a lot about horses and running a farm, but there is something else she knows a lot about. Ruth has been building a successful career in real estate and is currently working with RE/Max Real Estate Centre Inc, Orangeville, ON, an independently owned and operated brokerage, as a sales representa- tive.
She knows about real estate,
especially equine properties, and she has helped clients buy and sell starter homes, family farms, com- plex investments, and multi-mil- lion dollar equestrian centres.

Ruth Armstrong and “Frenchman”. Photo by Andrew Bailini. Her background as an equestrian, Ontario
business operator, and stable owner, give her a distinct understanding. She knows the questions to ask and how to market a potential horse prop- erty, from footing to fencing, pasture needs, find- ing hay, feed, trails, equine supplies and services etc. even specifics like sourcing out with her clients whether local bylaws will permit an apart- ment for groom’s quarters and other specifics that need answers. Ruth knows horses, riders and their families and understands their needs. And with a background in horse sales and a senior corporate executive, you know she can successfully negoti- ate a deal at any level. Ruth doesn’t just walk the
walk - she can trot the trot, too! Her network of countless contacts throughout Ontario makes it possible for her to work with buyers and sellers across the province. And if you’re starting the next chapter of
