By Kathy Patterson AQHA Director

AQHA is the largest equine

breed association in the world; here are some fun trivia that you might not know!

1. The Mixer Horse. The Mixer Horse might be one of the most recognizable horses in the world. There are many myths about who the horse on the AQHA logo re- ally is. This legendary painting has been what all horse owners want their American Quarter Horses to look like, but the truth is, it’s not a real horse. And what I mean by that is that the painter, Orren Mixer, didn’t use a real horse for the model. With the iconic Mixer Horse painting, he created the “ideal” American Quarter Horse. How crazy? 2. Wimpy. Most of us know that Wimpy P-1 received registration No. 1, but not many know why. The founders of AQHA reserved registration No. 1 for the stallion who won the Southwestern Expo- sition and Fat Stock Show (now known as the Fort Worth Live- stock Show). That horse was Wimpy, who was bred by the King Ranch. The P-1 stands for Permanent registry. 3. The American Quarter Horse Journal. The Journal is magazine that has become a staple in the homes of AQHA and American Quarter Horse lovers around the world. What you might not know is that the magazine began publi- cation in 1948. 4. Quarter Horses in the White House. U.S. Presidents have a reputation of having menageries

during their time in the White House. In 1956, President Dwight Eisenhower was gifted two Quarter Horses. Doodle De Do and Sporty Miss were the lucky horses that got to live at Pennsylva- nia Avenue. 5. All American Quarter Horse Congress. The world’s largest single-breed American Quarter Horse show in the world started small. In 1967, the Ohio Quarter Horse Asso- ciation held its first Congress show in Columbus, Ohio. The rest is history!

6. AJQHA. Although it is now known as the American Quarter Horse Youth Association, the American Junior Quarter Horse Association had its first meeting in 1970. With an initial member- ship of 3,000, I think it’s safe to say this Association has grown just a tad. AQHYA membership now sits at approximately 22,000 youth worldwide. 7. AQHA World Show. The Lucas Oil AQHA World Champi- onship Show is something we all look forward to every year. How- ever, in 1974 when the first AQHA World Show was held, it was different from what we’re used to today. For one thing, the first World Show was held in Louisville, Kentucky. It wasn’t moved to Oklahoma City until 1976. There were 692 horses shown in Louisville, representing 40 states and five Canadian provinces. Oh, how it’s grown! 8. All-Time Leading Sires. From 1996 to 2014 (that’s 18 years, people), Zippo Pine Bar held the title of all-time leading sire based on points earned. Invitation Only took that title away from Zippo Pine Bar on October 14, 2014, when Invitation Only passed the 77,061.5-point mark by two and a half points. 9. First AQHA Convention. Seventy-five people met at the Fort Worth Club on March 15, 1940, for the very first AQHA convention, where Bob Denhardt presented a charter that was mod- eled after the National Horse and Mule Association. Everything has to start somewhere, right? 10. More American Quarter

Horses live in Texas than any- where else in the world. Cur- rently, there are more than 420,000 American Quarter Horses that live in Texas. To put that into perspective, the com- bined total of internationally owned American Quarter Horses is about 410,000 – including the 250,000 horses that are in Canada. The saying “everything is bigger in Texas” is no joke.

Quarter Horses Star in ‘Long Ride Home’

Brazilian-turned-Canadian

cowboy journalist Filipe Masetti Leite shares 10,000 miles of ad- ventures from Canada to Brazil in his new book, soon to be a major motion picture. On July 8, 2012, Filipe and his two American Quarter Horses, Frenchmans Tru Angel and Going Perry headed out from the Calgary Stampede, headed for his home in Sao Paolo Brazil. The second-generation cowboy rode through 12 coun- tries, living out a lifelong dream passed down from his father and inspired by Aime Tschiffelly’s 1925 ride from Argentina to Washington D.C. Naturally, the journalist captured his adventures in a book, which is now available on Amazon: “Long Ride Home: Guts, Guns and Grizzlies, 800 Days Through the Americas in a Saddle.” The quest covers 10,000 miles and 800 days in the saddle, traversing the wilds of North, Central and South America, en- countering drug cartels, mass mi- gration, the glorious wilderness, the old cowboy ways, the kind- ness of strangers and the powerful connection between man and beast. The adventure with two Quarter Horses is also about to become a movie. As Filipe’s odyssey concluded in 2014 at his home in Sao Paulo, Brazil, it’s only fitting that a giant statue of Filipe and his horses now stands at the Barretos Rodeo in Sao Paulo, the largest rodeo in South America.
