MANAGING EMOTIONS

“Your emotions

are the slaves to your thoughts,

and you are the slave to your emotions.” ElizabethGilbert

Emotions are an integral part of our everyday lives. They can protect us by raising awareness of danger and also add colour and texture to the fabric of our lives as well as helping us findmeaning in our existence. Emotions can drive our

behaviours in both a positive and negativeway. We take on challenges becausewe feel excited,we cry becausewe feel upset or disappointed andwemake sacrifices becausewe care and feel deeply. However dealingwith emotions

can be challenging and sometimes overwhelming, especiallywhen life is hectic. It can be easy on occasion to give into feelings of anger, frustration and anxiety. Each emotion creates a complex

psychological state that involves three distinct components: a subjective experience, an internal physiological response, and an external responsive choice of behaviour.

There aremanyways that you canmanage your emotions andhere are three useful tips:

Understandyour emotional triggers First of all in order tomanage your emotions, you need to understand them.We all have emotional needs that are just as important as our physical needs. Taking time to identify your emotional needs is important. For example feeling in control, respected, appreciated; safe, trusted or valuedmay be very important to you.

Reframe your thinking When you understand your triggers, youwill bemore in control of your emotions and can use themto your advantage. When you knowthat something is triggering a negative emotion, take your focus away fromthat person or situation andwork on reframing your thinking.

GainPerspective When you are experiencing very strong emotions, it can be difficult to think straight. When you are angry or afraid, your body goes into a fight or flightmode, which can cause you to react emotionally instead of responding logically and this, iswhen you can end up behaving irrationally. Learn to take a deep breath and calm downwhen you are experiencing negative emotions. If you are having a heated discussionwith someone take some time out to calmdown and gain some perspective before taking the conversation any further.

“Poetry iswhen an emotion has

found its thought and the thought

has foundwords.” Robert Frost
