Parlour hygiene improvements help reduce antibiotics
D
airy farmers are being en- couraged to take practical steps in parlour hygiene
management to reduce antibiotics and take advantage of future milk marketing opportunities. Rob Kelly, regional sales direc- tor for Diversey, which owns the Deosan range of hygiene prod- ucts said: “As an industry we’re all aware of the concern and grow- ing awareness of antibiotic use on farm – and the need for action to reduce current levels.
“Milk buyers are already in- troducing measures to encourage reduced use, and farmers should revisit their milking routines to en- sure they’re implementing proto- cols that are compatible with good milk hygiene and udder health. A rigorous udder hygiene pro-
gramme, carried out with robust well formulated products, was a proven way of reducing the envi- ronmental challenges responsi- ble for infection, said Mr Kelly. It also encouraged healthier, more productive cows, leading to im- proved milk quality. “Post milking teat disinfection
plays a proven and crucial role in reducing the risk from mastitis causing organisms and a well for- mulated product will ensure hy- drated skin that can withstand the changeable conditions particular- ly in the summer.” Mr Kelly said it could be tempt- ing to reduce back on pre-milking teat preparation, perhaps remov- ing a disinfectant altogether, when cows were outside. But this could lead to fl uctuating bactoscan re-

sults and expose teats to bacte- ria when cows were dirtier than normal.
“Utilising carefully chosen teat hygiene pre and post milking dis- infectants will safeguard your business against unnecessary antibiotic use, and all the signifi - cant costs that are associated with it,” he said. As a result, producers
should invest in quality hygiene products.
“Remember that no two prod- ucts are the same. Choose the cor- rect product for the time of year, your farm conditions and teat hy- giene needs. If soil removal is crit- ical, ensure your choice of product delivers and without detriment to the integrity of the skin.”
