Pub may have to pull down a £5k play area
A BEARSTED pub and curry house is having to re-apply for planning permission for a chil- dren’s play area. Maidstone Borough Council said
the Rose Inn had 28 days to get the right planning permission or the play areawould have to go. Licensee Jaz Channa said the
equipment cost over £5,000 to install, andreceivedan immediate backlash when itwas built inmid-May. Mr Channa and his brother be-
lieved the planning permission they had applied for was suitable for building a play area in the pub beer garden as it fitted the criteria of maximum build height and dis- tance away from neighbouring fences. But Maidstone Borough Council
told the brothers the rules had changed for buildings that weren’t residential, meaning that the appli- cationwas invalid. The brothers nowhave to submit
retrospective planning, and if it is not granted in the next 28 day, they must dismantle the play area.
Mr Channa (pictured) said:
“Whenwe took over the pub, itwas a dump. Since then, we have spent time and money on this business and it’s now really thriving and busy. “We just wanted to create some-
thing that would be attractive to families. “Surely it’s better to have this
than a load of drunks in the beer garden?” The pub has also received com- plaints from neighbours about the
noise of the children and the height of the play
area.MrChanna built an even taller fence in the beer garden to try and appease the neighbours, but still receives complaints. On the Rose Inn’s Facebook page,
customer Stuart Robey said: “Pubs, which are part of the community, are closing everywhere and they want to do this?” Zoe Danielle posted: “Why do
theywant to do this? I think it’s bril- liant, my nephew loves playing here”. A spokesman forMaidstone Bor-
ough Council said: “A planning in- vestigator has visited the site to assess the issues surrounding the children’s play area. “The owner has been advised to
contact MBC’s planning depart- ment to discuss a suitable area, as permission has been refused for the equipment in its current location. “It will be necessary for a further
planning application to be submit- ted by the owner, irrespective of where the play area is to be finally placed.”
News
Path blocked WALKERS in Bearsted have criti- cised the closure of a field used as a link to the River Len and beyond. The comments follow the block-
ing of paths and the fencing of the field behind a recently demolished property off theAshford Road. Borough councillor Val Springett
is aware of the concerns but points out that as the land is privately owned, no offence has taken place. She said: “The fence has been put
upwith the intention of grazing cat- tle on this land ... the owner has every right to do this.” Walker Kevin Moran said the
route had been used for years and he hoped the owner might allow “reasonable public access as a com- munity gesture”.
