Work starts on village treememorial toWW1

WORK has started to prepare the ground for 100 commemorative hawthorns in Hollingbourne to mark the 100th anniversary of the end ofWWI. Volunteers, who will hopefully

include pupils from the village school, are expected to start plant- ing the trees, intersected by a ring of oaks, at the end of thismonth. The £35,000 needed to get the

ambitious project off the ground has been boosted by nearly £10,000 from the lottery and £15,000 from Tesco customers, according to Shaun Cardwell. The director of The Holling-

bourne Meadows Trust, which is working with Leeds, Holling- bourne and District branch of the Royal British Legion to create the livingmemorial, said: “The avenue will definitely be open in time for the 100th anniversary celebrations inNovember andwill be the trust’s biggest project so far.” The national business develop- ment manager says it is hoped to

raise more money through the many events taking place on site and donations to fence the area for grazing. It is also hoped to give up to £100,000 each to the RBL and the Trust, which wants to expand the 25-acre community open space, off Eyhorne Street. He said: “We hope that more

people will help us crowd-fund this initiative by visiting our Face- book page.” Each of the hawthorns will also be offered for sponsorship to the

families of those who have lost a loved one atwar. County councillor Shellina Pren-

dergast said: “I visited The Mead- ows for the first time for theWWI event, and was struck by the tran- quillity and beauty of the place – all very natural, yet accessible for vil- lagers, and visitors to enjoy. “I cannot think of many other

places in my division where the community has worked so hard to leave an amazing legacy for cur- rent and future generations.”
