rage notes Something to be proud of. Well, here we go again! Pride season is in full swing
and we’re about to dive into San Diego’s three-day extravaganza! There are tons of things happening and we’ve got
it all inside these pages: Interviews with TLC, JoJo, Grand Marshal Alberto Cortés and DJ Tom Stephan, with highlights on just about everything that there is to do—at least the fun stuff—over the course of the entire weekend. This year’s theme is Persist With Pride and each of
the interviews, including our other feature stories, have some sort of message about how persistence has created change in one way or another. JoJo talked about how her persistence was tested when she had to sue her record label in order to gain control over her voice. Fighting hard over the course of ten years eventually brought her voice back to her, literally, and she’s landed squarely on her feet. Luckily, she’s landing in San Diego for Pride to share it. The new FX Network seriesPOSE is a testament to
persistence to be sure. Creator Steven Canals had the initial idea for the series back in 2004, but sat on it for years until he was finished with his grad program and met Ryan Murphy. Canals believed in the project, and had pitched it to many a Hollywood executive, but they couldn’t see beyond subject matter they didn’t relate to on a personal level. Murphy did and understood that the framework for telling a story about connection, finding your place in the world and rising above your circumstances were solidly there. And, that they were subjects most anyone could relate to. Persistence paid off and as Canals said, “At its core, this show is truly about family, it’s aspirational and a show about resilience.” We also spoke with three former professional
athletes, Layana White, Haley Videckis and Ryan O’Callaghan who participated in the new documen- tary,Alone in the Game. They shared their stories
about the challenges they faced living in the closet as players, the terror of being found out and what living with that fear does to a person. It never ceases to amaze me, that though we’ve come so very far, LGBTQ people are still burdened with prejudice and shame in this day and age. Executive Producer David McFarland said of the show, “We’re giving viewers a rare look into the lives of these elite athlete’s unique journeys and open their eyes to the daily challenges these athletes face on and off the field of play. With added attention to this issue, I’m hopeful we can affect real change at the highest levels of American sport and that the next generation of LGBTQ athletes will be judged by their athletic performance, rather than their sexual orientation or gender identity.” Like Harvey Milk used to say, “Burst down those closet doors once and for all, and stand up and start to fight.” To get a completely different perspective, we
interviewed another director, Matt Tyrnauer, from the filmScotty and the Secret History of Hollywood. Scotty Bowers was a gas station attendant who worked on Hollywood Boulevard in the ‘40s and ‘50s, who basically acted as a pimp for the denizens who occupied the city’s celluloid closet. I found it interesting that even during a time when being arrested and facing potential violence were the norm, we persisted under that oppression and managed to find a way to connect with each other. Delightfully salacious, not unlike the gossip rags of the time, Bowers offers a window in to the past, showing how furtive we once had to be, and as he does, manages to look like theproverbial cat who swallowed the canary. Here you have it folks, another edition ofThe Rage Monthly and I for one, am proud of it. We are still here, we are still queer… I guess maybe we are used to it!
