Core Services Editorial

By the time you read this, summer will have been underway officially for about a month though it’s frequently a challenge to find signs of it in the UK. One thing is for certain: the minute there is good weather, everyone heads outside. Te parks are full, pubs overflow into the streets and any restaurant or café with outdoor seating is filled to capacity. Brits head to the beaches in droves up and down the country and pretty much anywhere with grass works as a picnic spot. In this issue we’re all about getting out and about too, from our look at pop ups around the country, to summer festivals to outdoor workouts. If you’re out and about in Cornwall this summer, make sure to stop by the Leach Pottery. We explore the history of this unique place in our Arts & Culture section and it’s worth the trip to see it no matter where you are.

A separate, mini theme that emerged while putting this issue together is that of British identity. If you’re new to Britain you may be unaware of the subtle, and not so subtle, differences between the nations that make up the UK. We explain it all on page 30 and then take it in a different direction with a delve into the significance and meaning of British flowers. If you’ve been here in any November you can’t have missed the red poppies pinned on lapels everywhere and this past May the royal wedding was full of floral significance and symbolism from the announcement to the bouquet to the veil.

As with every issue there’s much more to enjoy in this one too. Pull up a deckchair and enjoy it in the sun while you can! And if you’re out and about in Kensington this summer don’t forget to stop by to say hello. We’d love to see you.
