ACTIVITIES USE YOUR HEAD GEAR

Proper selection and fitting of your child’s cycling helmet is imperative for their safety. So we asked the experts at Pearson Cycles for their top tips.

• Correct placement: most helmets come with some sort of peak. This must be facing forward and sit in line with the brow. If your helmet doesn’t have a peak, then check for the ratchet adjustment which should be at the back of the head.

• Strap adjustment: avoid only adjusting the length of the buckle cord but also the shape of the webbing around the ears. Once adjusted and buckled, you should be able to fit no more than two fingers between the chin of the wearer and the strap of the helmet.

• Proper fit: all helmets should come with a ratcheting retention system at the back. This must be done up firmly and not tightly. Ideally there should be little to no movement from the helmet whilst the head is in motion.

Check the helmet every few weeks and if in doubt pop into a local cycle store for some advice.
