WONDERFUL WETLANDS


A wetland is a land area that is saturated with water. That could be for the whole year but some wetlands are seasonal and are dry for part of the year. Wetlands are the link between land and water and they support a huge variety of animals and plants.


Wetlands are the earth’s way of filtering water. They trap pollutants in the soil, so that by the time it reaches our water system it has already been filtered. Wetlands are also vital in preventing flood damage because water gets stored and slowly released back into the environment.


While we live in a big City, we are lucky enough to have some fabulous wetlands right on our doorstep. In fact the wetland at Morden Hall Park covers about three hectares and is cut in a sustainable way to maintain the habitat. The boardwalk makes it easily accessible for families, allowing you to get up close to the wildlife and a specially- designed platform allows you to go pond dipping.


Plan a day trip and see if you can spot some of the frogs, wetland birds and insects that are supported there – including a thriving population of smooth newts. So why not pop down this summer?
