BUYERS GUIDE

combining form with function. You might say that Stig Lindberg furnished the Swedish public home; during his long career he came to design everything from fabrics to citrus presses and televisions. It is widely accepted that if you grew up in Sweden during the 1950s and 1960s, you would not have avoided the Berså and Spisa Ribb tableware collections. Beside the work for Gustavsberg, he worked in a number of different areas such as glass design, textile design, as a painter and industrial designer, and as if his time wasn’t occupied enough, he also lectured at the University of Arts in Stockholm.

Because of his playful nature, he also loved working as a children’s book illustrator, an area for which he became much loved in his home country. So many children learnt to read from pages brightly decorated with his charming illustrations and the deep-rooted love of the books he illustrated have meant that they have been read over and over to subsequent generations.

Today collectors around the world are constantly on the hunt for his work. His simply elegant tea and tablewares have an exceptional resonance with today’s modern homes and for as little as £10 you can start to put together a collection of wares which are both usable and stylish in equal measure. At the other end of the spectrum are the serious aficionados who are keen to acquire his decorative wares made at the height of his career! These are a little more expensive with entry level examples of Karneval starting for as much as £150 and running upwards of £500 or £600 while rarer designs and ranges are now fetching in excess of £1000! All that said, these pieces are still turning up at car boot sales and charity shops, so familiarise yourself with his extensive design portfolio and you too could be lucky!

Through his work he set a certain tone which was unique to him and has never been surpassed. His work was and still is very unique, which marks him as one of the most influential and cherished Swedish designers. Stig Lindberg’s style contained originality, humour and flair which are key to the ongoing appreciation and love of his designs setting him apart from everyone else both during his lifetime and beyond.
