KAT SHAYLER SOCIAL MEDIA QUEEN

Kay Shayler owns a social media training company called Sharpfox which offers tailored social media coaching for small businesses and start-ups. With a love of fashion and accessories and a style of her own, Kat juggles her business as social media queen with family life in the Cotswolds.

I don’t know about you, but I’m struggling to get back in the ‘zone’ after a scorching Bank Holiday weekend. However, I’ve had to have a stern word with myself as work waits for no woman and there is plenty going on this month including workshop preparation and Big Feastival planning. The Feastival isn’t until the end of August, but our team starts spreading the word through the Cotswolds now!

Having a few days off with my family and less time in front of various screens did make me think about how much time I usually spend glued to apps that I can’t seemingly live without.

Statistics show that constant checking of our phone raises our cortisol levels, increases feelings of dissatisfaction and negatively impacts on our real life connections, closeness and the quality of conversation with those around us. So, I’ve decided that this month I’m going to be less phone dependent.

My first top tip for becoming less phone- dependent (I know, strange coming from someone who makes a living from social media) is simple - turn off those pesky notifications on your phone! It can take 25 minutes to refocus on a task once we’ve been distracted by a ‘ping’ from our phone… so turn them off! I can guarantee if you don’t check your phone for an hour then you won’t miss out on anything vital.

I recently downloaded an app called ‘Moment’ which tracks your screen time usage. The results were scary to say the least. The average person uses their phone for 3 hours 57 minutes per day. On day one I used

my phone for 5 hours and 8 minutes…. what a waste of life? So, welcome to the new me… the new Kat who will be phone free for oh… at least the next hour [laughing]. I’ll be able to enjoy all of the exciting events coming up in the Cotswolds without being glued to my phone… but wait….if I can’t Instagram myself at The Big Feastival - did it even really happen?!

Until next month…
