DENTAL HEALTH – THE DENT IST @ TUPSL E Y

HEALTHY GUMS, HEALTHY BODY Your oral health has a great impact on your overall general health. Inflamed gums are an easy entry-point for bacteria to enter the bloodstream which increases the risk of developing heart disease or a stroke. Diabetic patients are more prone to developing gum disease, which in severe cases, can cause fluctuations in their blood sugar levels. Other problems with poor oral health, include a higher risk of developing respiratory disease and, for pregnant women, can increase the chance of a premature delivery and underweight baby.

Unsurprisingly, your diet can have a huge impact on the health of your teeth. Following some simple suggestions can vastly help to protect both your teeth and gums:

• Wait for at least an hour after eating before brushing your teeth – acid and sugar soften the enamel and brushing immediately

afterwards will cause erosion

• Chewing sugar-free gum after eating can help reduce the levels of plaque acid in your mouth

• Even fruit contains high levels of natural sugar which will contribute towards decay in your mouth! Try to avoid snacking in between meals and only have sugar at mealtimes to limit the amount of times your teeth are under attack.
