Mum received a text from me out of the blue. “Do you fancy Mexico?” Getting a positive response, I set the wheels in motion. I picked it for our annual spring break (not that kind of spring break), because I’d yearned to go to there ever since a sudden bereavement forced me to ditch this part of my journey through Central America, back in my twenties.
As a backpacker with plenty of time, but not much money, I’d focused my attention on finding dollar-a-night accommodation in the best cultural hot spots. But with Mum in tow, and having developed a taste for a little more luxury, this time I plumped for the Fairmont Mayakoba hotel on the Riviera Maya.
