NATIONAL SMILE MONTH 14TH MAY – 14TH JUNE 2018

A smile is the universal hello… can you smile with confidence?

Dr Jelley, BDS, DipDH (GDC 6280)

National smile month is the UK’s largest and longest-running campaign to promote good oral health. It’s been running for four decades and the impact has been phenomenal!

SMILE PSYCHOLOGY A smile. It’s an influential and emotive gesture and is one of the most powerful tools at our disposal. Smiling is truly universal, unlike other physical actions such as body language or verbal communication, which varies within different cultures. Everyone understands smiling and the feelings associated with it. Often, we smile when we are happy, but did you know it can work in reverse and the act of smiling can make you feel happier? The ‘facial feedback hypothesis’ outlines that our brains react to what our body is doing. Putting on a smile, genuine or not, will cause our brains to interpret it as happiness and our mood will change accordingly. So why not take every step possible to ensure you have the confidence to smile?

DID YOU KNOW?

• A smile is the top of the list of things we notice when meeting a new person • It takes 43 muscles to frown, and only 17 to smile! • 61% of us have been attracted to someone by their smile alone

ORAL HEALTH Our teeth are an integral part of our smile and are often taken for granted. Not only do they help us bite and chew, they help us speak clearly and give our faces their shape, so it makes sense to give them the best care possible.

ENHANCING YOUR SMILE There are many options available to help you smile your best smile, including orthodontics (moving teeth) and teeth whitening which can lift the shade of your teeth by up to 6 shades in 1 hour.

THREE KEY MESSAGES ARE BEING PROMOTED BY THE NATIONAL SMILE MONTH:

• Brush your teeth last thing at night and at least once more during the day with a fluoride toothpaste – don’t ignore bleeding gums which indicates gum disease. Use an electric toothbrush and angle the toothbrush filament at 45 degrees into the gum, holding the brush for 3 seconds over each surface before moving to the next tooth

• Cut down on the frequency you have sugary food and drink • Visit your dentist regularly
