6 ASIA-PACIFIC NEWS CMP awarded in Hong Kong

Fiji marina made ‘Port of Entry’

It has been announced that Port Denarau Marina was officially declared a ‘Port of Entry’ in the 2017/18 Fiji Government budget. It is the island nation’s leading marina facility and the busiest commercial port in Fiji. The marina has been recognised

T

he Global Marina Institute (GMI) has announced that Hong Kong-based Goh Thye Hock of Professional

Yacht Service has been awarded Certified Marina Professional (CMP) status. He joins the ranks of two other Certified Marina Professionals in Asia, but is the first to receive this recognition in Hong Kong.

Marina Industries Association

(MIA) Executive Officer and GMI Director Colin Bransgrove presented the Certification to Goh Thye during a recent meeting of the MIA held at the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club (RHKYC). The

Institute’s Chairman, John Hogan, commented that the Certification was a very good example for others across the marina industries to aspire to. “Clearly, Goh Thye has built a very good skills base across the marina industries and he is committed to continuing professional development as required by the Certification.” Goh Thye Hock has been in

senior positions across the marina industries in Asia for over ten years, including Taiwanese marina development, superyacht charter in China and sailing and marina management in Singapore. He attended the GMI

Intermediate and Advance Marina Management courses held in Australia in 2006 and 2009, respectively. On receiving the Certification,

Goh Thye thanked the MIA for actively supporting his career development. He declared, “I look forward to being an active CMP and being connected to marina managers and professionals as part of the global network”.

by the Marina Industry Association as the International Marina of the Year for four consecutive years, winner of Community Support Initiative by a marina and awarded first Clean and Fish Friendly Marina in the Pacific. Previously, Port Denarau Marina

was a sufferance port with very high clearance costs, which was a major deterrent for foreign visitors having to clear into Lautoka. In the past few months, the Port Denarau team has been busy working together with government agencies to make sure that the processes are in place to ensure a seamless clearance inwards and outwards for vessels that have overnight bookings with the marina. Operational hours for ‘Port of

Entry’ clearance are from 08.00-16.00 hours Monday to Friday.

Atlantis achieves IK09 impact rating

The ‘Atlantis’ range of service pedestals has recently achieved an impact rating of IK09 carried out by the British Standards Institute to complement the IP65 rating already gained when Maricer launched the pedestal. The company has suggested that when specifying a service pedestal, many marine consultants don’t spend enough time considering impact resistance. Even though weathering impacts from debris

or other environmental conditions is a primary function of service pedestals, specifiers often expect them to perform flawlessly without considering the wide range of materials and various levels of strength represented in the marine service pedestal industry. Manufactured from marine

grade HDPE, ‘Atlantis’ has been designed to exhibit superior impact qualities than its fibreglass counterparts in marinas.

This is due to the flexibility of the material when subjected to

an impact collision, whereas the more rigid fibreglass can chip and crack even after suffering a minor brush with a dock trolley or fire cart being rolled down the pontoon. As it is rotary-moulded, the

‘Atlantis pedestal shell is less likely to acquire any imperfections during its manufacture, whereas fibreglass pedestals, being hand- crafted during their production, are subject to the risk of human error.
