Clipper Carnival boosts Whitsundays’ economy

A

ustralia’s Minister for Innovation and Tourism Industry Development and Minister for the

Commonwealth Games, The Honourable Kate Jones, has revealed the Whitsundays Clipper Race Carnival provided a boost to the local economy. She said the event held in January, this year, generated almost 8,800 visitor nights from attendees outside the region, adding that, “The event not only attracted visitors to the region, but encouraged participants to extend their stay and explore this beautiful region”. The Minister continued, “The

Whitsundays Clipper Race Carnival showcased some of the best of the Whitsundays region from long lunches on spectacular Whitehaven Beach to a Rodeo by the Reef in Bowen. “The event further cemented

the region’s reputation as one of the world’s premier sailing destinations and lured nature lovers from around the globe to the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef. “The report commissioned by

Tourism and Events Queensland (TEQ) revealed the event injected $2 million into the local economy, once again showcasing the positive effect events can have on a local community and economy.” The Minister said that just a

year after Cyclone Debbie ravaged the region, events like this are key to boosting the local economy, supporting local tourism operators and promoting the beautiful Whitsundays region.

She stated, “The Palaszczuk Government supported this event

through Tourism and Queensland’s It’s Live in Queensland calendar and due to the success of this biennual event, we’ll continue to support the Whitsundays Clipper Race Carnival in 2020 and 2022. “Tourism is a vital industry for the

Whitsundays as it is worth A$524 million to the local economy and supports around 4,500 local jobs – almost one-quarter of employment in the region. Through TEQ, the Palaszczuk Government is continuing to market and promote this region across Australia, as well as globally.”

Short term marina accommodation

The Marina Industries Association (MIA) recently announced its position with respect to short term marina accommodation. The Australian Marine Safety Authority (AMSA) has released for public consultation draft Exemption 27 Marine Safety (Short Term Marina Accommodation). If approved, this would allow recreational boat-owners, who berth their boats in marinas, to let their boats out for short term overnight accommodation to guests, for a fee, and subject to conditions within the exemption. MIA Chairman Andrew Chapman

said the MIA Board had considered the matter and the MIA also took in views expressed at a recent meeting of certified marina members. The MIA notes changes and

The proposed use of boats within a marina is subject to the written approval of the marina, giving marina operators control over the use within their facility. proposed exemption in principal as it has the potential to expose new people to the social and recreational benefits of marinas and to the boating lifestyle and in doing so bring new customers and revenue into the marina economy. It will also have the potential for participating marina berth-holders to cover some of their boating costs, thus making boat- ownership more affordable. The MIA encourages each individual

marina to assess its own suitability for the provision of short term marina accommodation, with careful reference to the proposed draft exemption. The draft is open for consultation until 26 June, 2018, and further information can be found via the AMSA website: www.amsa.gov.au/news- community/consultations/have-your- say-make-submission
