ust over a year has passed since the ninth Asia Pacific Yachting Conference took place at ONE˚15 Marina in Singapore when calls were made for Asian governments ONE˚15 Marinato embrace
the needs of the boating community and work with the industry to grow boating in the region. There has been some progress, notably by Thailand, and both Indonesia (see pages 10-11) and Tahiti have been active in encouraging superyachts to visit their coasts. However, delegates at the conference were reminded that the current increase in wealth amongst ASEAN nations didn’t automatically translate into boat ownership. The superyacht market, whilst it can have a significant impact on a local economy that caters to its needs, is still relatively small in terms of the number of these boats plying the oceans of the world. The previous issue of this magazine referred to
a report by Transparency Market Research entitled ‘Yacht Charter Market’, which stated that the Asia- Pacific region was likely to outshine all others in terms of growth rate. It also noted that the market in the region was receiving a major boost from the rising

number of charter destinations, increasing wealth and greater availability of yachts. This is, of course, encouraging news, but a strong
and successful marina industry needs local boat-owners committed to the sailing lifestyle. An important point made at the Singapore conference was that Asian boat-owners, who are new to leisure sailing, need to be mentored through the process of buying, equipping and maintaining a yacht. Enjoyable time on the water will cement their relationship with a marina, whilst a negative experience will cause them to question how they have chosen to spend their time and money! Government policies such as Tahiti’s simplified
clearance procedures can help to create favourable conditions for yachting, but marinas can have a bigger effect by organising sailing rallies and holding social events to create a community that welcomes new members. In this respect, Asian marinas can learn much from their counterparts in the Mediterranean where marinas are considered an integral part of their area.
