New hard nip sizing technology started up at Propapier

A

new type of sizer has been successfully started up at Propapier PM1

GmbH’s Burg mill in Germany. The OptiSizer Hard with

related chemical systems supplied by Valmet enabled the PM1 line, which produces liner, fluting and kraft substitute grades from 100 per cent waste paper, to make saleable containerboards from the start up.

The new technology is said to already show great potential

in achieving goals relating to strength properties and steam consumption. “I was quite amazed to see the

fast start-up of our new sizer,” said Phillipos Vrizas, technology manager at Propapier. “Earlier, high web tension levels were causing quite a bit of challenges to runnability. It looks like this obstacle no longer exists. We have achieved the targeted quality specification and now we can focus on the further benefits we are aiming at e.g. steam savings, higher strength

levels or starch savings.” Jani Hakola, development manager at Valmet’s Board and Paper Mills Business Unit, also commented: “The very first closing of the nip rolls is a moment telling a lot about any new sizer – especially a prototype sizer. It looked perfect. I couldn’t see any web tension induced wrinkling in the web. The schedule was very tight with only an 11-day shutdown time. The fact that we were able to squeeze it into a 10-day break was quite amazing

and a proof of an excellent cooperation and preplanning.” Compared to a conventional

sizer, OptiSizer Hard has a pair of hard cover nip rolls. Starch is sprayed on the rolls which transfer the starch into the nip where it is further transferred into paper web. Strength is among the most important benefits with OptiSizer Hard. Starch is dosed in the roll nip with higher nip pressure, which increases the density of fibres, leading to better strength properties.

More tissue machines for Lee & Man in China after successful start ups

Two new tissue lines have been started up successfully at Lee & Man’s Chongqing mill in China. Both use Advantage DCT 200 tissue machines supplied by Valmet with the first, TM13, starting up on 18 January while the second, TM15, starting up on 3 March. “Valmet has sold a total of nine tissue machines to Lee & Man since 2014. All the start ups have been characterised by good collaboration, efficient

installations and steady start up curves. Efficient project execution and tissue lines that deliver good results right from the first roll have become the trademarks of Valmet’s and Lee & Man’s winning co-operation,” said Valmet’s project manager Tomas Eklund. The tissue machines have a width of 5.6m and a design speed of 2,000 m/min, providing capacity for 60,000 tons of toilet and facial tissue per year. Lee & Man uses virgin wood pulp and bleached

bamboo fibre as raw material. Valmet will start two more

Advantage DCT 200 tissue production lines for Lee & Man at Chongqing during 2018. All nine machines are equipped with OptiFlo headbox and cast alloy Yankee cylinders. The Advantage tissue technology includes ViscoNip press, steam heated AirCap hood, WetDust dust system and a SoftReel P reel. Basic engineering and site services are also included in the delivery.

PT Buana Megah orders Valmet automation for its Pasuruan mill

Automation technology is being supplied by Valmet to PT Buana Megah’s PM3 board machine in Pasuruan, East Java, Indonesia. The order includes Valmet DNA automation system, an IQ quality

control system and consistency transmitters.

With an annual capacity of

62,780 tons of board and liner, the machine’s performance will be optimised to meet high

quality targets. “Valmet is capable of offering

a complete automation package, including all process controls with Valmet DNA, quality control with Valmet IQ and consistency

transmitters. Our long tradition of innovative automation solutions and professional project management are in our favour,” said Pete Teh, Valmet’s automation manager for Indonesia.

Valmet’s automation package is also included, with Valmet DNA machine and process control system (DCS), as well as Valmet IQ quality control system (QCS) and Valmet IQ Dilution Profiler. Established in 1994, Lee & Man

Paper Manufacturing Ltd has grown to operate five production sites in China with capacity of seven million tons of container board, duplex board and tissue paper as well as 180,000 tons of pulp.
