Wondering how other schools have secured funding? These three schools have shared the secrets of their success!

‘Our disco funded safety and life skills training for Year 6 children’

EVENT IDEAS, TURN TO P45

‘For three years the PSFA has paid for our Year 6s to attend a half-day workshop at the Lifeskills Centre in Bristol. 59 children went this year at a cost of £472, which we raised through a disco that made over £1,000. A parent took on the role of DJ free of charge as he has the equipment. Teaching staff from the relevant year groups volunteered to supervise the dance floor, and we had three sessions: Reception and Year 1, Years 2 and 3 and Years 4, 5 and 6. We charged £3 a ticket – which included fruit juice – and we sold tickets in advance. Profits were boosted by a tuck shop of snacks and drinks, as well as glowsticks and toys. We also set up a parents’ room, where we sold tea and cake, so parents could stay if they had an anxious child or had several children attending different sessions.

Lifeskills is a brilliant charity based in a former

warehouse. The building contains a realistic “village”, incorporating a replica street, supermarket, building site, restaurant, kitchen area, beach and garden. This enables children to take part in a number of workshops, where they can learn how to deal with difficult or dangerous scenarios that they may encounter as they become more independent. The children work together to decide how to overcome each problem, and are able to learn from their mistakes in a safe environment. This includes everything from practical skills such as shopping in a supermarket to what to do if you witness an assault or how to escape a house fire. The sessions used to be funded by the local

authority, but when they could no longer do so, the PSFA stepped in to help. The children really enjoy the Lifeskills

experience and come away from the session bursting with new knowledge, confidence and skills. We intend to fund this activity for the foreseeable future so that every child who attends The Tynings will move on to secondary school armed with these valuable life skills.’ Rebecca Matthews, PSFA Secretary, The Tyning School, Staple Hill, Bristol (420 pupils)
