Law firm Shoosmiths’ well-established Solent office is to enter a new era with the recent appointment of a new head of office who has ambitious designs on growth. Paula Swain takes over with the aim of expanding Shoosmiths’ workforce in the south and exploiting opportunities in the booming southern markets. Swain is a specialist dispute resolution lawyer, and was headhunted by the firm to help grow its litigation offering to clients. Swain aims to expand the workforce to more than 150 members, while enabling career progression and sustaining career enjoyment, with an even greater emphasis on implementing agile and collaborative working. Paula Swain succeeds previous head of office Stephen Porter, who is now the firm’s national head of corporate.


Leading law firm Coffin Mew has appointed Lindsay Taylor, a solicitor with over 10 years of experience, to its private client team in Southampton. She specialises in wills, trusts, probate and lasting power of attorney. She has dedicated her career to serving vulnerable clients including the elderly and those who lack mental capacity. At Coffin Mew Taylor aims to turn its Southampton office into a private client hub, one that stands apart from local competition by meeting with vulnerable people in a location that is convenient for them, be it in their homes or a hospital.


One of the largest firms in the south of England, Coffin Mew, has appointed a new senior associate solicitor to its Thames Valley office – the highly experienced Simon Berry. He brings over 30 years of experience to the wills, trusts and probate team, having worked in these specialisms since qualifying in 1988. He studied Law at the University of Kent but has spent his entire professional life working exclusively in the Thames Valley region. Dedicated to providing outstanding legal services to private clients, Berry has extensive experience of administering complex estates – such as those with assets overseas and substantial business or property interests.


Corporate recovery and business advisory firm Quantuma has strengthened its national expansion with the arrival of Mike Scales as business development director. Scales will be based in Quantuma’s Southampton office with a remit to develop and deliver the company’s national growth plans. He joins from Minasca Consulting, a fee protection insurance specialist, where he was managing director for more than three years. Before that he was business development manager for nine years at Taxwise Services. He previously spent more than 20 years in South Africa, where he ran his own business and worked for various national insurance companies.

Sunseeker International has announced that iconic industry leader, John Braithwaite, will be retiring after 53 hugely successful years with the organisation. Braithwaite’s retirement has been timed to coincide with his 70th birthday celebrations in May and his decision will mark the end of a significant era for both the brand and the industry alike. Braithwaite has made an enormous contribution to the marine business, starting his career in 1964 at Friars Cliff Marine, which became Poole Powerboats in 1969 when it moved into the town of Poole and subsequently Sunseeker International in 1985.


Leading Dorset and Somerset law firm, Humphries Kirk, has appointed a new senior partner and promoted four of its staff for the new financial year. Katharine Jones (centre) has been appointed senior partner of the firm. Specialising in all aspects of commercial and residential property. Michelle Dixon (right) has been promoted to a partner of the firm. Based in the Poole office, she is a solicitor specialising in construction law. Rebecca Keeshan (centre left) has been promoted as an associate. A solicitor working in the Swanage office, she practises all aspects of commercial property. Claire Colborne (centre right) and Debbie Roper (left) have both been promoted to associates. Colborne joined the firm in 2003 and now works in the Crewkerne office. She specialises in buying and selling leasehold and freehold properties, re-mortgages, shared ownership and help-to-buy new builds. Roper specialises in all aspects of family law, working with the team in the Poole office.
