thames valley deals awards Management Team of the Year

WINNER: Hogg Robinson ‘Formed in London by two brothers-in-law, a company with an illustrious 170-year history, and now a world-class organisation’ – Judges’ comment

Hogg Robinson Group, the FTSE250 travel agent, agreed a £410 million takeover by American Express Global Business Travel, a deal merging two of the world’s top three travel management companies. Separately, HRG agreed a £141m deal with Visa to sell its payments software subsidiary, Fraedom.

Winner’s words

David Radcliffe: “We feel very proud and privileged to have won this award, to be honest we’re ‘over the moon’.

“My job as chief executive is easy. I get to point in all directions, but the guys who do the real work are back in my management team.

“The way the deal was structured means we will help form part of a formidable global company while the 54% premium on the sale share price is good for shareholders as well.”

The other finalists • Alpha FX • Clifford Thames • Hunter Macdonald • TeamSport

Corporate Finance Adviser

WINNER: Wendy Hart, Grant Thornton

‘One of the most experienced advisers in the region, and now the first woman to win this accolade’ – Judges’ comment

Wendy Hart led Grant Thornton’s corporate finance team to one of its best years, with completed transactions totalling £300 million. Two major deals – the Magal Engineering sale and complex Roc Technologies transaction – were standout highlights, and her team’s pipeline is strong for 2018 and beyond.

Winner’s words

“I’m massively proud because although I have done this work for a long time, I’ve never competed for this award before. It

seems quite weird as a woman to have won because the corporate finance environment is quite male. I’ve simply found my own way of doing things well, and it’s really nice to have this recognition.

“The challenge of corporate finance is that deals can be all-encompassing.”

The other finalists

• Simon Davies, Spectrum Corporate Finance

• Clive Hatchard, Spectrum Corporate Finance

Law Firm of the Year

WINNER: Gateley plc ‘A firm applauded for making a significant Thames Valley impact, from pretty much a standing start’ – Judges’ comment

With over £130 million in deals, Gateley’s team has grown rapidly since its Reading office inception in early 2016, acting for PE buyers on new transactions, for corporate acquirers, and owners selling their businesses. Prominent deals included Act Clean, Teamsport, Powerpax, Charles Lucas & Marshall/Coffin Mew, and MyPolicy.

Rapid success

“I’m really, really proud to have won this award tonight, coming less than two years since we took occupation of The Blade,” said Christopher Avery, Gateley’s Thames
