YEAR THE INREVIEW THE TOP STORIES OF 2017 – HISPANIC ENGINEER & IT MAGAZINE
DACA, CAREER STORIES, MILITARY VETERANS, AND LATINO ENTREPRENEURS MADE HEADLINE NEWS ON
HISPANICENGINEER.COM AND SOCIAL MEDIA NETWORKS.
The biggest story of 2017 was the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) immigration policy.
Soon after Labor Day, 15 states and the District of Columbia sued to block a plan to end the DACA program protecting young people brought to America as children from deportation. Those already enrolled in DACA remain covered until their permits expire. If their permits expired before March 5, 2018, they are eligible to renew them for another two years as long as they apply by October 5 of this year, but the program isn’t accepting new applications.
In Hispanic Engineer’s Executive Talks series, Aleida Socarras’s unconventional
career grabbed readers’ attention. With over 25 years of experience in the energy and natural gas industries, Socarras has seen a lot of changes. When asked to give her best advice to young Hispanics embarking on their future careers, she suggests taking it one day at a time and to keep working toward your goal.
“Just go for what you want. The world has obstacles, so don’t try to set your own. Sometimes you just have to take the leap and build your wings on the way down,” she said.
As Vice President of Sales at Schneider Electric, Ivonne Valdes said she aims to spark interest in young women around the world in science, technology,

engineering, and math (STEM). Valdes also remarked on how her granddaughter was unexcited about robotics classes until she learned her favorite animations were made by software engineers.
In 1991, Luis Alberto Febres became the first Puerto African to win the Horatio Alger Association Scholarship. Febres’s inspiring success story attracted as many clicks as Anthony Jimenez, the retired U.S. Army officer who founded MicroTech in March of 2004. Their career stories were big hits during November, which was celebrated as Veterans and Military Families Month for the first time.
