MAKING MORE MINUTES - TIME MANAGEMENT FOR PRE-PROFESSIONALS


all have the same 24 hours in a day but we’re not all equally productive during that period. The key to being more productive is to focus on activities that will move you closer to your goal. Time management is the broader term for the various systems used for planning and prioritizing activities.

Christine St. Vil, Founder, Purpose Driven Media, defi nes time management as “the process of planning and exercising conscious control over the amount of time spent on specifi c activities.” Conscious is the


challenge faced by many students is how to be more organized and productive. We

According to Belinda Moses, Director, Spirit of Excellence Professionals, “we need to be more realistic with time.” This means being aware of how we actually spend time and what can be accomplished during the hours not devoted to sleeping, eating, family, work, and other activities.


The process of time management involves goal setting, prioritizing activities, and taking action.


Goal Setting


The fi rst step in goal setting is to fi guring out what you want to achieve. Second is to break that goal into smaller projects. Third, develop monthly, weekly, and daily plans that will get you closer to achieving your goals. And fourth, be fl exible. Life happens and things will occur that are outside of your control. As a result you will get off track. It’s not the end of the world. Take a breathe and get back on track.


Retirement is an example of a long term goal. First step: When do you want to retire? What does retirement look like to you? Where do you live?
