LATINO CAREER ADVANCEMENT REMAINS A CHALLENGE


Corporate leaders may speak of wanting greater Hispanic representation in their companies, but they often lack a comprehensive understanding of who Latinos are and the vast distinctions that exist among them.


T


his is one of the conclusions of Andrés Tomás Tapia and his colleague Robert Rodriquez,


Ph.D., authors of Auténtico: The Definitive Guide to Latino Career Success.


Diversity among Latinos involves the countries they come from, the languages they may or may not speak, the range of their immigration stories, how they self-identify, and more.


“Within the vast complexity [of Latinos], you have Spanish-dominant Latinos, English-dominant Latinos, Spanglish-dominant Latinos, Latinos who speak no Spanish at all, retro Latinos who’ve assimilated…” Tapia points out, adding that Latinos represent 27 different nationalities. Some Latinos fully embrace their heritage and have chosen not to hide it. Others have boundaries around their identity because of exposure to European-American values. Others may have grown up equivocal but in adulthood have rediscovered their roots. Lastly, there are those who have

denied and disowned any connection to Latino culture, according to the research findings of Rodriquez and Tapia.


Corporate leaders need to be more knowledgeable and sophisticated in

seeking to diversify their workforce, Tapia said.


There is now an urgency to better understand and better address issues related to career advancement, according to Tapia.
