All fab… alfresco!

Now that spring is here, it’s time to get out into the garden and lap up the glorious sun’s rays. Here’s MM’s guide to having your garden in tip-top condition with all of the latest ‘must haves’ and ‘to dos’.

The arrival of spring affords us the opportunity to spend time outdoors, either relaxing or working in the garden. It also affords us the chance to splash out on features that are specifically designed to spruce up the garden! Once the sun starts to peep out from behind the clouds, it’s time to turn your attention to making your garden look both attractive and welcoming.

Decking Decking is perfect for entertaining alfresco, particularly since it means that your visitors or guests don’t have to stand on your (hopefully!) well- manicured lawn. It can be built in almost any shape, colour or size, which means you can design it to suit your tastes and budget. It is possible to build your own simple decking, but professional advice is recommended for more complicated designs. Standard components and decking boards are available from most DIY stores and are usually long-lasting – especially if you also purchase a ready-prepared decking kit.

Landscaping Landscaping a garden is often perceived as an expensive business, with the cost viewed as prohibitive by many. However, with a little brainstorming, you can take some of the cost out of the process by doing some of the work yourself and then bringing in the professionals for the more highly-skilled aspects. As a first step, make two lists: what you want for your garden and what you need. Do you, for example, want a floral garden, a cottage garden, or groupings of perennial grasses around your property? Do you want a water garden? Does a stone patio appeal?

44 Modernmum If you have children, you may need some grass for

them to play on, or a place for a swing. If you need privacy between yourself and your

neighbours, then you may consider a fence. Once you’re done with the ‘want and need’ lists,

number them in order of importance and then draw out a rough sketch of your property. Then begin to sketch in the landscape elements to see how and where they would fit on to your property.

Patios A patio forms a brilliant transition between your house and your garden, so it’s vital that the material and style work in harmony with the home. Circular patios often look best when the patio is right up against the house, while, for a more modern look, a circular patio in the middle of the garden can be extremely attractive. Once you’ve organised the general appearance of

your garden, you can turn your attention to the fantastic accessories that give your garden the ‘wow’ factor!
