District Chief Special Operations Larry Clymer and Michael Armistead,

hazmat specialist, from Nashville Fire Department talk to Gwyn Winfield about providing security to one of America’s fastest growing cities

Grand Ole CBRNE

I

t’s hard to avoid thoughts of growing pains when you wander around Nashville. Forbes magazine recently nominated it the third fastest growing city in America and it’s said that 100 people move there every day. All these in-comers are great news for local businesses, but both businesses and residents now require additional products, like fuel. This is seeing a surge in investment in the area with, among others, a controversial new road

system that should take the pressure off the transit system, which wasn’t designed for this sudden influx. It not just people that are passing through Nashville either. The gas pipelines that run across Tennessee have a shocking record (https://www.courier-journal.com/ story/ tech/science/environment/ 2015/04/09/tennessee-gas-pipeline-poor- safety-record/ 25543049/) and not only the locals are upset. The fines and reputational risk is pushing energy

companies back to more traditional shipping routes, including canal and road. Suddenly Nashville has a lot of people and product on the road. All these changes are impacting one

of the oldest established hazmat cities in the US. From new businesses moving in that may well have novel toxic industrial chemicals (TIC)/TIR) requirements, to the increase in hazmat transitting the greater Nashville region, all the extra work has fallen into the lap
