from lawyers and doctors unless you abso- lutely needed their services. Over the last three years I developed an issue with my left hip to the point I knew it was not going to go away on its own. I went to see an orthopedic doctor in Bangor who instantly said I needed to have the hip replaced. My wife works with a cardiac surgeon who recently had this pro- cedure done. He had done a lot of research and I made an appointment with the doctor he chose, Dr. Babikan in Falmouth. It comes down to the approach, you want an anterior approach as this way they spread the muscles not cut them. I had two visits to his offi ce and the date was set for 22 December. I was told that I would be down six weeks and I said no, that was not happening. They then asked what I did when I was on the road. When I told them they said perfect as they want you moving about. When 22 December arrived I got to the hospital at 0600, in operating room at 0700 and then in my room by 1000 with my laptop going by 1015. Amazingly there was absolutely no pain. I went for a walk a couple of hours later and maybe two hours after that it was up and down some stairs. You could feel it, but it was not that bad. The next day I was out. For about a week I used a walker and then switched to a cane. In less than three weeks I was walking pretty much without a cane. If you have a hip issue, I would highly recommend Dr. Babikan. Rehab gave me a lot of time to do data

entry and read. I have read the fi rst volume of Voltaire’s life; and then read three books on the whaling disaster of 1871 and the de- cline of that industry. It is interesting to note how they kept thinking they were going to

be able to salvage something as their world crumbled around them. One would think the writing was on the wall in really big letters. Many of the most wealthy whaling people would end up broke because they failed to heed the signs of the coming collapse. Voltaire is someone I had always wanted to know more about and I fi nally took the time to. Life back then was not easy, but Voltaire did not make it easy on himself ei- ther speaking out on the French government or religion. Sometimes to the point that they would throw him in prison or banish him to a foreign country. It is interesting at that time that actors and actresses could not be buried in a cemetery until they were blessed by a priest. This was because they were not thought of very highly. As far as data entry goes, got more than

4,000 vessels into the computer from the 1960 List of Merchant Vessels of the United States, with just 42,000 to go. To keep my sanity, I also worked putting in magazine and newspaper articles. When working in ‘Atlantic Fisherman’ for 1943 came across a reference that Will Frost was not in Mas- sachusetts or Rhode Island, but Boothbay Harbor. He was working for Reed Brothers as head of their shipyard, but also designing the big draggers they were building at that time. I also found numerous other references for large commercial boats built during the war years. It was interesting to learn about the industry and how the war aff ected it. Did you know mussels were being harvested for the fi rst time commercially during the war? It was also stated that the rivers of Maine would not support an oyster industry, well I think that was disproven.
