Page 10. MAINE COASTAL NEWS February 2018

Waterfront News The Kittery Planning Board voted

unanimously to approve all items regarding Wood Island Station’s restoration at their meeting last week! This is an exceptionally important mile-

stone that confi rms the contracts created be- tween the Town of Kittery (owner of Wood Island Station) and Wood Island Life Saving Station Association (the charity working to restore it) from 2016. Many details were reviewed and com-

pared to Kittery’s Land Use Code. In the end, the proposal to fully restore the historic and rare station and open it to the public as a maritime museum was found to conform with Kittery’s regulations. With the excellent result from the Plan-

5 January Coast Guard suspends search for missing clammer BOSTON — The Coast Guard suspended its search Friday for a missing man who did not return from a clamming trip near Long Cove, Maine, Thursday evening. Missing is 33-year-old Paul Benner. A family member alerted the Depart-

ment of Public Safety in Augusta, Maine, to the situation Thursday, resulting in a request for Coast Guard Sector Northern New En- gland assistance by Maine Marine Patrol. The family reported that Benner depart-

ed from the Long Cove Boat Ramp at 5 p.m. to clam on Clark Island off Long Cove, and did not return later in the evening. Benner was reported to be in a 16-foot

skiff that matches the description of an unmanned skiff found near Long Cove last night.

ning Board, now the push is on to raise the funds necessary to ccomplish the ambitious scope of work for next spring and partner with the Maine National Guard. The budget for 2018 is $900,000 and there is more work possible beyond that if more funding can be secured! In time for a September 1 deadline,

WILSSA submitted an application for $200,000 to the Maritime Heritage grant program run by the National Park Service and other federal partners. Recall that this project was funded by that program at that amount in 2015 and produced an excellent result of a cleaned and rebuilt structure with a new roof. We will not know the outcome of the

current application until the spring, but there should be no doubt that the Maine National Guard is eager to come to Kittery with their very valuable free labor, the project to date has been an unqualifi ed success, and the ability of a fully restored Wood Island Sta- tion to educate many, many people about an important part of our Nation’s maritime heritage is clear. A new investment from the Park Service

in Wood Island would be so important and so timely. And the value of the Guard’s labor is $500,000 - so the leverage opportunity is outstanding. WILSSA had a strong team of profes-

sionals helping make it all look easy (which it wasn’t). Thanks to the Planning Board (and staff ) for their help - and the Kittery Code Enforcement Offi cer, Bob Marchi,

was especially wonderful. Bob gave his views from time to time and kept the process moving in a very productive direction. The great news is that the many, many

permissions required to fully restore the Station and open it for the enjoyment of the public are now in hand; local, state and federal. So it is time to raise the funds for the materials that will be needed for the excep- tionally innovative eff ort to move nearly 1000 tons of rock and block to the island and build a new north sea wall, construct a new pier, install electrical and plumbing in the Station and rebuild the historic shed all with the use of the Maine National Guard in only 30 days! And if we are really really lucky, maybe we can fi nish most of the interior next summer too.
